Nothing more specific than that ... I mean, yeah, I could make a game or something, but I only have character portraits and "enemy sprites" for her, and I can't think of a way to make a game with no one but her (albeit in multiple versions) as characters. And I just don't feel as dedicated to other characters ... well, maybe if I should ever happen to have a lot of time ...
For now, it's just a way for me to be creative about my love for her.

Oh, they are! I can only recommend everyone to do it for characters they like. Just find an RPG that suits this character (Sailor Moon: Another Story in my case) and try to immitate the style. I wanted to go full way and only use colours that are already in that games palettes (in official sprites), but picking appropriate colours from those is by far the least fun part - so maybe don't apply that additional constraint.

But the necessarily reduced level of detail in these is a great thing for people like me who obsess over small things and are never satisfied how stuff turn out. I'm way more confident in these than I am in my random scribbles.

There is nothing special to using a mouse. It's just a test of muscle memory. You can get decent at it by practicing drawing with it for about two weeks or so. When I started using my tablet I was better at drawing with the mouse, that's because I had a bit more practice with it.
Now, spending thousands of hours drawing to master your fundamental drawing skills regardless of the tools you use? Now that's what takes real skill and commitment.

c)The brush tool is an antialiased brush. While the gray pixels help the line look smoother, it messes up the fill. The pencil tool is aliased so it fills right.
(That is also what's done in anime production, the pencils or lines are converted into hard aliased pixels to be filled with no artifacts and are smoother by a program later.

True, which is why you pretty much every production smooths out their work afterwords.
When working in paint the best way to smooth out your work is to resize it by a slight amount
If you work in photoshop you can smooth things out by blurring it slightly, and in the anime industry they usually use a filter in the video editor to smooth out the frames.

There is a way to avoid this process by drawing vector, but not everyone likes using vectors, and getting really clean vectors can be time consuming.

Mouse users, if your wrist is hurting or you aren't getting enough precision, consider lowering the sensitivity and turning off "enhance pointer precision." That option moves the pointer based on a multiplication of the speed you move the mouse and the distance it moved, but if you turn it off, the speed is ignored. The pointer will move a the same number of pixels for a given distance of mouse movement. Much easier and more consistent. Also consider getting a decent gaming mouse if your mouse's tracking sucks.

Mouse drawing is viable but not really worth the trouble.

Just turning off mouse acceleration will be helpful for beginners who didn't know about it. I'm not suggesting this as a replacement for tablets.

There's no easy answer for improving as an artist. You have to be willing to grind it out for a long time to get to the good stuff.

You can just get DosBox, boot and old copy of Windown 3.1 (definitely counts as abandonware by now) and use the version of Paint included with it. Old Paint is much better than new Paint anyway.
