The first two OVAs hold up well, since the strength of the series has always been in how likable the characters are. Tenchi Universe is pretty decent if you're up for more, though it started the trend of flanderizing the characters like crazy (with Mihoshi getting the worst of it by far). Tenchi in Tokyo and the other OVAs aren't really worth your time. Don't know about GXP or War on Geminar or any of the other spinoffs.

War on Geminar is good since it relies entirely on a new cast, with very little fanservice back to the original cast (I think Washu gets ONE silhouette and that's it). It follows the Universe formula of half of the series being cute worldbuilding and shenanigans, then a plot-drop oh fuck episode, then the second half being all about dealing with the fallout from that.

Ayeka is canonically a dom. That character trait apparently started as a joke in one of the audio dramas but quickly spiraled into Kajishima's writing because Kajishima is a total shotacon and into femdom.

Universe was aired on television whereas Ryo-Ohki wasn't, so it had to be toned down. Plus, I think the show runner of that saw it as more of an action sci-fi series and the original creator saw it as a goofy, sexy harem series. It's pretty well-known that the creative heads behind the franchise often butted heads about what they wanted to do with it.

There's the MacFarlane statues that aren't bad, if the eyes are just a bit wonky. The Ryo-Ohki that comes with it is godawful. I've got the normal and EB Toys repaint.

There's almost no Tenchi figures out there.
There's McFarlane's Ryoko and battle mode Tenchi, those dolls that come in a really neat box, and a handful of chibi figures made for Universe.

They just had bikinis or towels on in the Onsen scenes, other than that it was intact.

I think they did cut a few really lewd bits, but only a few seconds. If I'm not mistaken, they remove the shot of Tenchi's grandpa groping Ryoko's tits, but still left in enough of the scene that most could figure out what he had done to her and why she was angry and trying to punch him.

I've only seen the third one, but they're all supposed to be solid.
There's Daughter of Darkness, I have no idea what the second one is about at all, and the third one is actually really somber, in which Tenchi is kidnapped by a ghost and trapped in some Lotus Eater Dream scenario, and Ryoko and Ayeka spend about a year trying to find him.

Only ever saw the first and third, I think my video store didn't get the second one, Tenchi Forever or what the name was. I remember the first one being pretty cool with some of its fight scenes, though the villain was just some "evil entity" out for revenge. While the other movie, Daughter of Darkness was kind of like a condensed version of the series it was tied to, Tenchi in Tokyo, what with the villain being some girl trying to force herself onto Tenchi and push all of the girls away while Sasami yet again befriends her.

It was pretty fun taking the Kagato arc, which was only like 3 episodes in the original OVAs and making it into a more grand and epic story. And the time/space bits in the first half were certainly exciting, and kind of touching. I recall Mihoshi's being pretty heartfelt since she wanted a pretty normal life with Tenchi.

Mary Elizabeth McGlynn is pretty good. Maybe not quite the same huskiness you hear from Petrea, but still pretty sexy when she gets to play the more flirty female characters. What was even up with Tenchi? I remembered watching it on toonami forever ago, it started out with a fair amount of action and adventure, and they went to space, Tenchi apparently died but came back with super powers and defeated the bad guy.

But then it just became home shenanigans without any action or anything. It felt like a total 180.

The first series that ran on Toonami was made up of like two OVAs or whatever, with the first ending with a big villain, while the second was setting up for more threats or whatever. Then that series went dark for a number of years, during which we got two anime spinoffs that basically retold the story, but with some twists. The first of them starts out with some shenanigans across parallel dimensions or whatever for the first half, then the remainder becomes a sort of extended version of the villain arc from the original series. The second anime was pretty much all original, even rebooting the meeting between Tenchi and the girls (in this case, just dumping them all into his lap in one moment instead of a few at a time) and largely playing out with a monster/villain of the week sort of formula.

Geminar is miles better, no Nabeshin to fuck it up. I'd love to see an adaptation of GXP done with Kajishima and some of the OVA 1&2 team directing, though.

GXP was kind of fun, but the animation felt really weak compared to the earlier shows. Haven't seen enough of Geminar to know how it compares. Plotwise, I also felt that GXP was kind of lacking, just sort of being "here's another guy who gets a harem" and just sort of having no direction compared to the original show.

I liked some of it myself, and the henchmen for the main villain were kind of entertaining, even if they all felt like rejects from a Sailor Moon arc. Honestly, the only real negative of it was the girl who was one of the villain's projections or whatever. She just seemed to have little interesting traits aside from being a girl who didn't make Tenchi act like a faggot. And while I guess that was kind of the point, with her being seemingly perfect, it could have been handled much better all the same. Though I suppose it could be worse, Noike or whatever her name is from the later OVAs just felt almost like a Mary Sue in how she pretty much got all the other girls to play nicely and seemed to have no flaws like they did.

Different qualities reminds me of that shitstorm going with that new funimation release for DBZ and their grain removal.

I probably watched that movie 30 times. I randomly rented it at one point, because I liked the character designs, and it's what got me into anime in the first place. Tenchi, then Eva, then DBZ. Kind of a weird order to get into them.
