If Oda stopped pumping out One Piece chapters like he's doing now, Jump would drop him like a hot potato. The only reason for them to keep him around is because he can quickly and reliably produce cheap variations of the same old formula that their target demographic eats up like crazy.

You'd be surprised how few people you'll encounter that watch the one piece anime on the regular. At least for my experience it's usually people trying to convince you to watch the OP anime rather than already watching it. Most western people instead fall into series like NnT or whatever is the flavor of the season show.

Togashi owns his own series, he releases when he wants too, and is a very respected mangaka and editor in the east if you look at how other people regard him. Quite frankly he's in the ideal position for someone who releases at most 12 chapters in a year.

Not that user, but I mentioned this above your reply. Togashi actually owns Hunter x Hunter as it's copyright to his own studio and not Shuensha like the vast majority of WSJ series are. Plus the guy apparently was able to negotiate a more favorable contract after YYH ended and the end result of whatever happened led to Togashi being able to release when he wanted and his series still pulls in the numbers whenever it releases. Oda by extension is a respected and wealthy mangaka, but even with him being forced to take breaks he has to churn out all kinds of stuff OP on a constant basis to keep Jump afloat. Dude's their cashcow right now and they own him in one form or another.
