The manga is just a five-chapter sort of side-story/alternate telling by the person who did the original character designs. Much more focused on Nao and the very beginning of the story, which was nice.

The ending to the manga is way better than the ending to the anime. I think that if they went a more character-focused route all the way through it would've been way better than the weird lore twist that got put in.

The whole sacred maiden plotline was both an interesting idea, but a poor execution. Mostly because the other pilots weren't given a lot of focus over the entire series in favor of Hoshino's drama and then the sporadic love traingle with the shrine maiden. While also dealing with Hiso's motivation as a pilot and her feelings of love.
But the one thing that really bothers me is that we never got more on the true name of the dragons. There are name plates in these dragons but that never gets brought up again. Much like a lot of things.

Agreed, it wasn't fantastically-done or really necessary. The first three episodes of comfy SOL were really the best. But I liked the ending, and the music was amazing and the animation such a breath of fresh air. Solid 9/10 still.

I think that they didn't bring it up because naming her dragon "Masotan" represents her more, just like how "Akemi" represents Lilikos more because that's what she sees in her dragon, just her relative. Also Hisone blurts out fucking everything and she and her big mouth spat out the actual name so she had to go with it, while the others probably kept it a secret if they knew.

I did too, but there was more than a couple of episodes leading up to it that just felt like a bit over the place.
It's more me not liking a plot element getting addressed when it arguably felt important. These dragons are old, there's this idea of heritage and passing the torch through generations, yet we never address this giant elephant in the room about the origins of these names or these dragons. Just felt like a loose end that wasn't worth pursuing.
I actually feel bad I missed out on these threads before now.
