You have to remember that up until Battle Tendency the most strategy that wasn't played for a gag laugh was Kenshiro hitting people in certain spots and figuring out Souther had a reversed blood flow for some reason

This is just terrible writing on every front. The plot needed a cliche "such resolve!" moment to happen with no plausible context to lead into it and as a result had to contrive one out of nothing. Not even the Kars asspulls can hope to come close in shamelessness.
