It was a lot better than I thought it would be, although it is the first episode so whether or not they can maintain this level remains to be seen. The worst part for me was the part in King's apartment after Saitama knocks the bird out the window. The coloring was awful and the frame duplication and stupid blurriness ruined the fights, but it's not as bad as their other failures at least so it's a start. We'll see how far it drops after ep3-4.

I wouldn't say good but better than what we thought it would be. The Op visuals are definitely the lowest point and pacing was fast. Otherwise they did try to improve from what the abysmal trailers showed. Hopefully they can keep at least this up. Also it seems they are focusing more on the art and being somewhat similar to the manga in some shots.

If they remove the shitty gradient effect they put on characters like Saitama I might be able to set aside my grievances and accept the animation for what it is - a marked step down from S1, but still acceptable at worst. Some shots looked better than they did in the PV so I was pleasantly surprised. All things considered the show is still entertaining but the pacing of the episode was kinda weird, felt like they tried to cram in too much at once.

I think the issue was that the episode didn't have a proper opening scene to set up the season, it just dropped us right back into the story

I was pleasantly surprised too. There are actually some tidbits of good animation and the shit in the trailer seems to be either fixed or far less egregious. It's nowhere near as good as S1 in terms of animation quality, but it's more than watchable. Only real complaint I have is some of the shot directing, they needlessly hold on to animating things as they are drawn in the manga. That being said, if I worked for JC I'd be afraid of messing with Murata's godly work too.

I think it's a little odd how the animation looks so smooth in some scenes like hand motions and such but rough as hell in others like faster paced fight scenes, but overall I think it's pretty solid so far. Hyped.

We haven't seen any full action sequences yet, and they removed a few of the frames that were mocked in the trailer, so I'm going to reserve judgement until we see more of the season. I suspect that there will be significant dips in quality.

I'd say it was slightly above mediocre. The King scenes (the focus of the episode) were all done well, with surprisingly detailed multi-toned shading for a 2010s anime.

You can go back and watch the sequence, they show the Crazy Diamond portion of the original page -- where he's starting the kick -- and cut to this page immediately after.

They've been going apeshit with over-the-top animation recently. Also obviously season 2 ends at the part fight.

They do this intentionally to cover up unfinished animation work. There were a few cases of it in the Genos action scenes earlier in the episode.
It's not accidental, the studio is very much aware of how impossible it is to discern detail when frames fade over each other like this. It's very intentional.

They will probably give it more details once we reach Garou vs Genos ala Dragon Ball Super.

Yeah the directing in this ep felt very competent for some scenes of comedy, but then it was full of stuff like this where it felt like they just didn't know how to transition between cuts done by different animators, or like they couldn't manage the quality control to have things remain relatively consistent within the same scene and just hide to smooth over and hide the fuckups as much as possible. The awkwardly blatant panning stills that just sort of intrude into otherwise dynamic scenes were definitely a symptom.

Right now this is reminding me of the Deen UBW movie.

desu the first episode wasn't anything amazing but it was serviceable. I could definitely tell the difference in style between JC and the mad house, but honestly it's just different, not really "bad".

I think the only actual issue I could see is that they went a little ham with editing and doing shit like color correction and visual effects that arer so obviously added in during post.

You could also tell that they did some Panic last-minute edits to some shots, like the genos punch shot from the trailer had a really fuckin wacky camera move added in to very obviously hide it. Most normie viewers won't notice it but as an animator It was REALLY obvious (because I would do the same thing if it were me)

Dunno how I feel about all the added ghosting effects though.

One thing I WILL give them credit for is doing second-pass on all the metals to give them more shine and metallic-ness - even though it's still a style break from season 1 (which went for a more generic shading style instead) and desu it looks

In general, the general directing and cinematography was actually quite good. It's still a decently faithful recreation of ONE's work with Murata's art. I especially like how they did King and Saitama meeting.

Here's the issue though
You don't need an all star team.
You really do just need one really passionate director with a vision.
The reason for this is you can make up a lot for a lack of talent with interesting direction and foundation. Even if the animation isn't that hot or detailed, if what you're seeing is at least interesting, you can get away with a lot.
I'd compare this to the bit in Mob Psycho II where Shimazaki is shown teleporting by just changing the background around him. That shot doesn't actually have that many uniquely drawn frames but it does an interesting visual trick to convey an idea.
OPM is the same way: just have a person who's really passionate and really creative head the project to figure out how to convey something in an interesting way, even if it doesnt end up having a ton of unique frames of animation

It's not passion or ambition they lack, it's time. Keyframes are drawn once and they make as few inbetweens as they can get away with. They spend all their available time drawing and no time planning shots or transitions beyond the first thing that comes to mind, and it shows. Murata has the luxury of redoing things as much as he wants until he's satisfied.

A studio like Bones would have given the animators enough time to do this right. But we're stuck with J.C. Staff that treats animators like machines in their goddamn factory.

I honestly expected people to give me more flak over where I put Watchdog Man.

In my mind, Metal Bat is able to, just barely, hang in the same category as the top tier S-ranks, withe the additional ability to potentially grow beyond them. Though I suspect his growth won't catch up with his ability to survive the attacks that spur him on.
Darkshine I could lower or raise a tier. I won't argue that. But I'd put Watchdog Man, as we've seen him, at the same tier.
Sweet Mask would be... probably Medium*. He's strong, but nowhere near as strong as he thinks he is.

King's deal is that he has a single method of success in combat. Bluff+Intimidate. He is just so coincidentally, maxed out in those skills. The moment he comes across an enemy he can't throw a Fear effect on, he's no better than a normal civilian

I was trying for an overall dependability measure. Matchups are a genuine problem. Very few heroes can do something about a city wiping meteor, for example, even if it's considered Dragon class

So far, Tatsumaki appears to be above S rank, like Fubuki is about B rank. Obviously, visibly, but not impossibly. Putting her as high as possible and noting that she's at the maximum level, is fine, so far. Considering S Class is, "so far beyond human ranking that we lack appropriate measures," I don't feel bad putting her on the farthest top while not moving her past that.
In my mind, Blast and Saitama are past that

Oh, there we go. My argument for WDM is super weak, to the point where I'm only able to support him via enthusiasm and his off panel feats. Him not participating in fights, weirdly, puts him higher up in my mind. In contrast, Bofoi repeatedly engages in fights, and fails, consistently. His theoretical strength is higher, which is why I ranked him highest in medium, with growth potential, but the simplest effort of sending more than one drone into a fight, was never performed in the series as I recall.

At least in the Murata manga, he seemed was past the level of Garou given that he's like a berserker: he gets stronger the more damage he takes

Considering how easily he passes out after a fight, I think his growth potential vis fighting spirit has an ultimate limit. That limit might be surpassed if his little sister is in the city he's protecting, or if she's cheering him on, or [other cliche] but I have no real way of knowing.
If certainly seems like he has the same generic "strong body" that most heroes have, with an addition of "fighting spirit" that no one else does, though.

Yeah, that guy is fucking crazy. That show is whatever, but the fight had some great detail to the weight of the actions. Getting the smaller actions the right movement is never a waste.

Am I the only one bothered by how the giant bird was handled? We get one horrendeous Saitama turning shot and that weird triple frame of king, then it suddenly cuts to Genos and G4, then suddenly it's back and the bird was gone. There was no transition to speak of.

Here's an idea: make it from King's POV and show us how he closes his eyes as everything fades to black, then give us a fucking punching sound effect as king slowly reopens his eyeslids, everything is a blur first but then he sees Saitama standing and the bird gone.

A Suiryu who has actually trained recently and immediately goes for the kill could MAYBE beat Garou towards the start of his monster hunt, but Garou's ability to evolve and get zenkai boosts would mean he would win 9/10 times.

Enlightened criticism:
Madhouse took some liberties with the source material to better translate it into animation.
JC Staff are making the manga panels move around.

Funnily enough, no. In the manga, pic related happens before it cuts back to King's apartment, giving closure to their fight before moving onto the next scene. Why the anime tried to frankenstein everything together is beyond me.
Actually I kinda liked that. Made it feel more subtle and fit the tone of the scene more.

Some of the King scenes were decent, and I'd argue the flashback was genuinely kino. I thought things were looking up by the end up the episode, but then the shit-tier OP went and shot down my expectations.

Everything with Saitama and Genos really looked horrible, they really spent all their resources on king.

kakeguri isn't an action anime though, it doesn't need good animation.

Cheated would be DB's levels and if they didn't try to fix stuff. We all expected it to be mediocre and some parts were but others they showed they were willing to fix and change. The Genos fight I expected pure ass but it was actually alright. Not perfect but watchable and I enjoyed it. Cheating is as the other user said is DB's episode 5 or Taboo Tatoo. Yonko and the others feel cheated because they still expected too much even when they knew production on it was having problems.

I threw all expectations out and just watched the show from a neutral standpoint, it was still clearly below most shows from this season. I guess I just hate the idea that a first episode of a show you're supposed to spend your resources on to show the world what you're capable of still looks this average, I dread what'll happen next episode.

Genos probably has a robot voicebox at this point, his jaw doesn't need to move for him to produce speech. His lips moving could just be for effect to make it look more natural to others.
Do we know at this point in the anime (or up to date in the manga for that matter) what parts of Genos are robot and which are still organic?

I like how the S heroes are kinda dependant on matchups besides simply being "really fast and really stronk".
If the enemy can be killed by a speedy sword, Flash is the best one. He's near Awakened Garou levels of speed, I'd argue he can blitz even Tatsumaki but with her shield up it's impossible to damage her. At the same time her psychic abilities would never catch up to him and if she tries something funny like crushing the whole city he'll just escape the nanosecond he senses it coming. As I said, if his sword isn't enough he doesn't have any tricks to get rid of the enemy unless he carries ninja poison or something. So Darkshine and Tats are out of the question, though maybe he could stab his eyes?
Also it's a possibility that Atomic Samurai can bait him and kill him with the atomic slash. Samurai himself is not that fast but it's an anime thing that your combat/reaction speed can surpass your usual stats so I imagine he'll predict Flash and make him mincemeat with a blind counter.
On that note, so far the Atomic Slash has slashed everything so there's the possibility he can kill Darkshine. Muscles are nice but those slashes are too thin, "atomic" level. Darkshine himself packs the strongest punch in the association besides Saitama and I have to wonder if Tats could actually kill him besides shooting him into space. I don't think he'd be easy to twist, he was the closest thing to Garou and maybe could have beaten Golden Sperm. Despite all that power, Bang is the best CQC fighter and Darkshine could never land a blow on him while again Bang could just finger his eyes and win, and maybe Bang can disarm and react to both Samurai and Flash.

Then there's the heroes who have no way to counter Genos/Drive/Metal Knight/CE just nuking the whole place. And Metal Bat who can potentially break Tats' skull with a swing of his bat.

Atomic is pretty fast as in a CD drama sonic tried to attack him and atomic drew his sword so fast even sonic couldn't keep up. I can see flash winning overall since he can fight without his weapons.
