Are you implying Shinkai's work hasn't all been relatively the same? Theres obviously been an improvement in storytelling and visual presentation since he started but besides the Ghibli ripoff he made, all of his movies have had the exact same aesthetic. I wouldn't chalk him up to be leeching off his previous successes, this is just the kind of thing he likes to make and he's found people he works well with.

That's like 4th time by now though? It also has same character designer (the one who did Darling in the Franxx character designs) and art director. It's good to keep your friends close, but with such strong emphasis on rain I think this one will blend in with the feet fetish movie they did.

No I'm not. I clearly implied Myazaki had a consistent "aesthetic and format" with his movies too. The only points I've made in this thread are, I don't believe Shinkai is specifically trying to make Your Name again, he just likes to tell one kind of story and he himself has always had a very consistent visual aesthetic. And that I don't believe the guy truely dislikes how his movie became one of the most popular of all time. That might be something you say in an attempt to seem humble and meek in the eyes of the artistic community you are attempting to impress but nobody is going to sit there at the end of the day and think "I hate that my most ambitious project to date was loved by millions of people around the world." That's bullshit.
