If you like Ishihara's old stuff, you will probably like Hibike. The first 6 episodes are kinda weak at times but from episode 7 onwards it finds its tone and gets pretty good. Personally, I think Shuuichi's always had a personality, in both the source and the anime. However, in the former, you could argue he's a bit more "fun", and it's important to note that almost every interaction you see Kumiko have with Hazuki and Midori in the anime was actually done with Shoe, so there's a good amount of development and contact that the anime removed. He's just as much of a side character in the second volume that he is in the anime, though. Never read the 3rd volume.
