Not a bad episode but it kinda annoyed me how the reflector doesn't work like in the original.
To change dimensions you touch the tiny stone in the middle, not the hemisphere at the top; that's what saves your game.
Also, to save your space/time location you don't just touch a jewel, you have to physically it out of the reflector and leave it somewhere, upon which it disappears (indicating that you've changed space/time positions, since time constantly moves forward for you, but the jewel always stays stuck at one point in time.)
All of the main girls, except Eriko, have their own route in the game so they basically all win. No idea how the anime will handle things, though.

Feels really cheap.

Here is what I knew about YU-NO going in:

And thus, I went into YU-NO cautiously optimistic. My heart was open, ready for a new and exciting story to experience. Twenty years later, I could be part of the new generation of YU-NO fans.

And then it was like YU-NO went out of its way to alienate me. Things looked bad from the first scene. Takuya gets an eyeful of the school nurse’s underwear, followed by some highly inappropriate banter with her referring to his erection. She was also wearing an outfit more appropriate for clubbing, which… hey, if that’s what you like to wear and do, that’s fine, no judgment. But maybe not for your job as a nurse. At a high school.

That’s not exactly surprising. This is based on porn and sometimes it can be hard to shed all the signifiers after a genre shift. But there’s no getting around all the indicators that Takuya fucking sucks. He’s the kind of guy that’ll lie on the ground, looking up someone’s skirt, making rude comments the entire time. He’s a jackass right off the bat, and I wouldn’t want to spend another second following him or anyone like him around.

Most of the rest of the episode proceeds like an extremely rote visual novel adaptation. Takuya has an expository conversation with his best friend while walking down a seemingly endless hallway. A parade of girls, one after another, appear to have brief conversations with Takuya to establish their relationship with him and disappear into the ether. I don’t remember any of them, except that one is tsundere (“I don’t know why she doesn’t like you,” his friend says, and I shout back at the TV, “Really? It’s pretty obvious to everyone else!”) and one is his young, hot stepmom who he will undoubtedly have sex with.

So by the time the real meat of the story comes in to play, I was totally checked out. It’s too bad, too, because when the story does kick in, it has potential to be interesting. Who doesn’t love an evil corporation forcing through unpopular construction projects, mystical artifacts that arrive under strange circumstances, and mysterious elf-eared girls who inexplicably materialize? (Although the elf-eared girl is extremely naked, because of course she is.)

Despite having never played the game, the setting and music had a soothingly nostalgic quality as well. It might have been worth another episode to see where it was going, at least. But Takuya is still The Worst, so it’s all for naught.

It was only a minute or two into the premiere of the exhaustively titled YU-NO: A girl who chants love at the bound of this world. that I said to myself, “Ah, I see. It's based on a harem romance visual novel. Probably a really old one, too.” Maybe it was the inexplicable narration and faux-artistic visuals that opened the episode, or maybe it was the fact that one of the first visuals we get is of the teenage main character, Takuya Arima, gazing straight up his teacher's skirt and into her crotch, but that was about all it took for me to get that old sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. It isn't that I hate visual novels, or even anime based on visual novels – it's just that I've been around the block enough to smell the real stinkers from a mile away, and Yu-No busts out so many of the genre's worst tricks that the show might as well be Pepe le Pew, which would make me the poor cat that gets traumatized by the pervy skunk week after week.

I'd heard of Yu-No several times before getting into VNs. Like countless. Probably the fifth most mentioned one, behind Fate/Tsukihime and Umineko/Higurashi. Or maybe sixth behind Saya no Uta. But definitely popular as HELL regardless.
And at the time the only games I played were MMOs and portable console games. Straight up VNs were a foreign concept.

Call it frivolous but I loved the old artwork's physique, females had such great legs and good sized breasts, considering how extreme modern hentai and to a lesser is about proportions it's weird they didn't adjust their shapes a bit more, I hate to be that guy but many old designs made me feel aroused just to look at them.

VNs are a lot more niche than anime to begin with. Not everyone has the time or patience to read through hours and hours of text. Which is why games with VN elements that got popular are either short or feature other forms of gameplay too.

Ryu Umemoto's a legend. He made my favourite rendition of Clair De Lune in the game. The anime doesn't do the soundtrack justice from what I've heard based on the two episodes.

Well, I tried to play it in English and it was so bad that I stopped after few minutes. It's on my wait list after I will be able to read Japanese comfortably like English (which is my second language).
For now I can read comfortably Manga and play games like Xenoblade.
VNs have way too much text for me (for now) and reading it would take forever.

My guess is because there wasn't an easily hackable port of the game that included the h-scenes and wasn't a remake. We have EVE burst error A now, though, so someone might try soon.

If anyone wants to play the OG with voice and H-scenes included(the windows ver doesn't have them and the PC98 ver is in japanese) you can at tss.asenheim.org/eve-burst-error.html just be sure to pick PC98 in options before starting a game.

It took me a while to find a full H-scenes ver. with english translations.
