Basically what said. I can't speak for everyone else, but I actually don't think SAO is all that bad - it's more in the range of mediocre to decent. It's not very creative or well made, it has some good ideas, some bad ideas, and a whole lot of standard, by-the-numbers tropes. For me what I find agitating is just how many people think it's better than it is - to the point of many unironically calling it their favorite series. It's unbelievably popular, and perhaps this is petty, but the idea of people eating up this bog-standard schlock and treating it as something profound, excellent, or in any way more than a 6/10 is incredibly frustrating.

That's kind of my broad stance on SAO as a whole, but it's the same on my stance on Kirito specifically. He's not that bad - he even has some solid character sometimes - but he's not very good either.

At least, Kirito doesn't own beastfolk loli sex slaves, which already makes him better than your typical isekai MC

He's a poorly done "loser", barely even a loner and nowhere near flashy or cool enough to pull of the "overpowered badass" shtick.

It was a massive gateway anime, it wasn't my first but it was probably my 2nd or 3rd show I saw and the popularity of that first season was just mind blowing. All of my friends were talking about it, anywhere I went online there was talk about it. And I know I am just asking for it but I fell in love with Asuna and I don't care how many times I am called a newfag with shit taste she will always have a special place in my heart. I know she is a shallow character like the rest of the show but it was a combination of the times and the hype and it struck when the iron was hot. That is why the show just won't die even though I really wish it would at this point. I still watch it just because but I stopped loving it a while ago.

Kirito himself is pretty bland as a character. People hate on SAO because they feel like they are cool for doing it. Same as hating on Linkin Park or Nickelback.

Now SAO is not without its faults but its competing with RE:zero or Overlord that are no better in any way. I'm not even going to talk about Shield Hero, that is vomit worthy cringe.

Kirit is not the worst character ever.
The issue is, other badly written series quickly fade, while SAO just won't go away.

Because the anime fucks him over, it takes away his inner monologues which makes his larping autism look like unironic edge.

Because after 3 fucking seasons of SAO I cannot describe anything about his character. He is a non-character. Honestly I just finished watching Alicization and I barely even remember what he did for the whole season. I remember Eugeo, Alice, Quinella, Cardinal, even fucking chudelkin. Hell Asuna's 5 minutes of screen time was more interesting than anything kirito did besides wanting to win the game and be sad when comrades die.
