Actually scratch that he does have a deux ex machina in Book 1, that's literally the reason he even makes it out of the village in the first place, you just don't find out the exact details yet until book 3. Brendel literally fails within an hour after transmigrating.

Except the ring ties into the story heavily and into Brendel's background, specifically his grandfather and his bloodline. So even if they are deux ex machina it's well written, the cards actually wouldn't have affected Brendel's early plans because he still had inferior ways to deal with the situation it just would have resulted in Brendel losing the opportunity to influence Fortress Redon thus changing the whole story, but he wouldn't have died.

The mystery of the cards not being unfolded yet doesn't automatically make it bad writing, there's been a lot of hints here and there but it'd be spoiling and there's no reason to do so.

In the end it all comes down to character determining destiny, and Brendel's character made his destiny to shine glory on himself. To argue against it is essentially denying Aouine itself.
