FLCL has the fame it does because it was great and people loved it. I think the small amount of infamy it has now is as a result of it always being recommended and regarded so highly for so long.

FLCL feels like it was made specifically to annoy me. Everything about it, from the artstyle, voice actors, characters, the referential nature, the humor, the plot, the randomness, the "irony", and then the sudden putting its head up its ass towards the end just rubbed me the wrong way.
Haruko might be the most annoying character I've come across in an anime, her voice rubs me the wrong way and everything she does makes me wince.
Outside of the vocal tracks which were admittedly great, the soundtrack is actually ear-grating too.
Watching this garbage, and growing up surrounded by people who worshiped it, and browsing forums where people constantly praised it as the bee's knees made me want to repeatedly hit my fucking head against a wall. It felt like I was missing some point, even though I also perfectly understood what FLCL was meant to be about.
I love Gainax otherwise, FLCL just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I don't know what to tell ya. To me, FLCL is the only thing that compares, to, say, the Charlie Brown specials in terms of, uh, how soulful the whole thing is. I actually like the sequels, but FLCL, to me, is like the polar opposite of filler bullshit in anything.

user I think you might just be hanging around Yea Forums a bit too much. I've never encountered a circle of anime fans where the general consensus was "FLCL is bad". If it's full of casuals, they might not have heard of it, but most people I know who watched it all think it's awesome. The sequels have a bad reputation, but it's absolutely deserved in that case.

Not to play devil's advocate against my favorite series in the world, but there are a lot of tracks that had vocals removed for the series. Advice being the only one I can recall at the moment. Also Mitsumune did a ton of tracks for the soundtrack, it's not just pillows music.
And with that said, I know they're as important to the series as anything else, but the pillows are one of the worst Japanese bands still in circulation, they are absolute sell-outs who have been pushing out the same disgusting unfanged mid-tempo pop-rock drivel for 20 years. They make Foo Fighters look edgy, they're literally Japanese Green Day.

It's my personal 10/10 that i've seen over 30 times and my favorite anime of all time. At this point i've come to terms with the fact that some people just can't get it, and that's OK. It bothers me when someone thinks that the show is incoherent and meaningless, but I've just learned to let it go, because the people who believe that don't want to be wrong.
