This show had such an impact on me as a kid; it legitimately got me into reading Jules Verne and other 19th century literature.

Is it based on anything other than loosely 20000 leagues under the sea? I only read that and journey to the center of the earth

Don't Forget to Try in Mind!

That show was surprisingly 9/10 if you know beforehand what arcs you should skip.

I remember coming across the opening one day by complete accident on Youtube and honestly falling in love with that OP which prompted me to watch the anime.

Took me a long time to finish it, and was sadly spoiled on a plot point but overall, it was really good, a solid 9/10 in my eyes. Even the Island arc didn't phase me (but the terrible fucking animation did, holy shit it was laughably bad).

The characters were great (well Nadia was a bitch), the voices were great even in the dub, the style was beautiful as well. Really gave off a feeling of adventure for the first 20 episode or so.

I need to do the same to be honest, pretty much every piece of media I enjoy comes from his books, and from what I hear all the plots are really interesting and something I'd really enjoy reading.

It's better than 20000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Italian theme was nice too:

Nobody would date Nadia irl though, let's be honest

So long as the sex is good (shes literally a circus acrobat no way it isn't) I'd put up with her for that exotic brown teenage royal alien puss
Wait are aliens still aliens if they're born on earth?

I started the show and hated it. Almost wanted to drop it. Then around when they got to the Gargoyle island, is where it started to grow on me. When Nautilus got destroyed and Elektra had her breakdown, is where I really started to like it. I skipped the filler arc. And the final 4 episodes are the most intense, epic and cool finale I have seen in anime. The OST is amazing, the animation is amazing and the characters really grew on me.
The OST deserves another mention:

Imo one of the most underrated great OST ever.

Was he the most based character in all of anime?

There's a torrent on /t/ for the soundtrack if you'd want it.

>if you'd want it.
Yes, please.

>Never seen Nadia before
>Youtube recommends this OP
>Listen to it
>Legitimately cry at it
What the hell

I wish Anno could go back at making anime like this and Eva.

But he hasn't stopped making Eva.
Rebuild 3.0+1.0 coming soon™

I love Nadia but there's sadly so little to talk about.

My favourite character of the show. I already liked him from the start, but this moment pushed him into a top 10 for me.

Nadia dub > sub.

You're not wrong. Each character had a unique voice that really sounded good and I was surprised at just how good the dub was overall.

Sanson had a great voice as well, really added to his character.

can't even get her color consistent on ads

I watched Nadia just cause I liked the OP. Too bad actual soundtrack doesn't start out the same

The darker ones are from the terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad sequel movie.
At least it's not as bad as what Newtype did to her.

The kids' voices were a bit uneven, but I still have to applaud ADV for hiring actual children to voice them and they did marvelous for being so young.
And I really did love the Grandis Gang overall, even if they sounded like a steampunk Team Rocket.

I've avoided it because I keep hearing about how bad it is.

I found it weird that they actually got real kids to play the kids. Sure they took some time to get into the roles, but their performances were pretty authentic. And Gargoyle had a really cool voice. At first he sounded like he is really bored and uninterested in everything. But as his acts went more and more brutal and insane, his not-caring voice actually made him look like much more of a psychopath. I liked that over the japanese VA, who played him as much more of a straight forward evil villain.

Anyone notice how similar Nadia is to Laputa castle in the sky?
>Like both have a mysterious girl that has a glowing pendant that is really important.
>Meanwhile some goofy pirates want to get it
>The inventor MC helps out the girl.
>and an calm but crazy villain in a suit wants to harness a strong weapon that is located in an ancient city that can fly.

You made the right decision.
What we got from ADV was definitely better that what Steamline had started. They only got 8 episodes done before either losing or dropping the project. Complete with Nadia having a French accent and Darth Vader Gargoyle.

I can't believe one of the only times Yea Forums likes a dub, I prefer it in sub. It's usually the other way around. Still as I was watching I could help but imagine my dream dub for it, I'd totally cast Crispin Freeman as Sanson.

Indian Nemo in the ADV dub fits so well, because Nemo in the Verne book was implied to be of indian descent.

The funny thing is, Miyazaki wrote both storylines.
He actually wrote it back in the early 70s when he was hired by Toho to write a few story concepts for them. One of them was the basis for what would become Nadia that involved a couple of orphans going on adventures around the world aboard the Nautilus with Captain Nemo. Toho took the idea and tossed it on a shelf somewhere. A few years later Miyazaki wanted to actually make it, but Toho wouldn't give him the rights to his own story concept. So he adapted to have more airships instead of submarines and made Future Boy Conan.
A few years later, Miyazaki wanted to take another crack at the Nadia premise but didn't want to give Toho any money. So he wrapped up the "magical jewel is key to ancient civilization" in even more airships and made Laputa. Which was a bit of an issue with Spanish-speaking counties.
NHK eventually bought the story from Toho and shopped around to different animation houses, eventually giving the project to Gainax. Incidentally, Anno wasn't supposed to direct it. Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, who did the character designs, was the one to made the pitch to NHK for the contract. He got most of the way through directing the first episode before he realized he was in over his head and asked Anno to take over.

I first watched it subbed, so I have the Jap voices firmly implanted in my head as the default. Still, I try to give credit where I feel it's due.
And while I do really like Crispin Freeman as an actor, I don't know if he could really pull off the manic energy Sanson sometimes exudes.
In Mysterious Island, Verne has Nemo flat out say he was Indian. In later additions of 20,000 Leagues, there's a chapter where Nemo saves an Indian pearl diver and admits to Arronax that he's Indian, too.
Despite Verne describing him as pale and clean-shaven, with wide-set eyes.

I need to reread the book. And even though I watched Nadia like a few months ago, I really feel like rewatching it soon.

Not anime related but, if you enjoy the feeling of Laputa and Nadia, you should play Skies of Arcadia and Grandia.

When I saw Laputa and Nadia, all I thought was "wow, this really gives off a Skies of Arcadia feel" and loved them both. So I imagine you should give it a try if you ever get a chance. Both pieces of media give off a grand feeling of adventure that really sold them to me.

Plus, I'm sure Skies references Laputa a few times

Did anyone else ever notice how similar the backstory and some of the plot in Fullmetal Alchemist is to Nadia, down to the fucntion of the philosophers stone in both (that is, holding souls)? Backstory between them is especially similar.
Of course Nadia is far from inventing the idea of the philosophers stone, but I did a bit of searching and I never found any reference to it having peoples souls in it other than in Nadia and Full Metal Alchemist.

Yeah I mentioned this a couple years ago once, in the slim chance someone here actually remembers that and feels like they're getting deja vu, but it's not something I've ever see brought up ever.
