It's worse than that, they took away Reiner, Zeke, and Levi (all important characters, especially the 2 former) and molded them into that one character. Also they forced Mikasa into a relationship with him for reasons.

Historia was combined with Mikasa. The soldiers refer to Mikasa as a goddess which is also how they refer to Krista in the manga/anime.
