Typical isekai for loners who want to imagine themselves surrounded by a bunch of chicks lusting for their dicks.
This genre is so fucking pathetic.

The mystery at the beginning was pretty intriguing. In a lot of isekai the main character gets in a world and then everything is explained to an understandable level. In rezero the main character and the viewer doesn't know anything, everything is completely shrouded in mystery and you just get snippets with each death.
The show started getting dull to me when the world got explained too much and everything falls into place. Instead of just having the mystery that you have to puzzle together. Pretty much how the story of dark souls would be pretty boring if it was explained at the start of the game in two pages. Instead of hunting for clues between two deaths.

Isekai where the MC isn't a mary-sue, and has nothing to help him, not even his horrible personality and self-centered selfish attitude.
Only ability he has is to repeat things with no additional help unless he works to obtain it.

Everyone in the fantasy world is Superhuman to Godlike, and MC is slightly below average. Even alleyway thugs are a serious and deadly threat.

MC gets no deus ex machine to help him, even the actual DXM character (Reinhard) has the obvious weakness of not being able to always save everyone (he fails frequently, and his only strength is his fighting ability.)

It's very well written and enjoyable.
By no means is it perfect, but it's damn good, and a LOT of heart and soul was put into the anime adaptation.

The director was constantly aware that he had to keep the staff from making Subaru seem "cool" or likable until his big turnaround.

Even that story about the anime staff tracking down a Docomo 503i so they could play that Ringtone in Episode 19 on it for the anime shows how much effort they put into it.

It does a good job of deconstructing the isekai genre by putting a regular MC in a more believable scenario instead of the usual shit where he just happens to be the most competent dude in the entire alternative world who has overpowered cheat abilities and everyone instantly falls in love with him. He's just a regular socially awkward NEET stuck in a brutal and unforgiving world where in terms of strength and skill pretty much everyone has the advantage against him. People in the world usually regard him as obnoxious or suspicious when they first meet him until he earns their trust (hell at one point Emilia, his main love interest gets fed up with his autistic and selfish bullshit and takes off until he redeems himself). The closest thing he has to a cheat ability is a sort of ground hogs day effect that more often than not leaves him traumatized from getting killed gruesomely and painfully and watching the people he loves and cares about get killed as well.
Basically instead of depicting a sort of wish fulfillment world for readers to fantasize about living in it depicts a pretty grim and brutal setting that you probably would not fucking want to find yourself in unless you're an extreme masochist who enjoys the idea of getting disemboweled, decapitated, dismembered, etc.

I enjoy the shitposting it brings.
