They didn't. It turned out that the GJ-Bu we knew was actually a fictional story being written by the MC in which he changed everyone's traits around. The light novels are continuing the with the "real" cast as well as occasionally giving us other fictional story worlds being written by members of the main cast. Obviously it dropped in popularity, but surprisingly it's still selling better than I would have expected it to.

The author has given you tons of flexibility in whether you believe GJ-Bu is a fictional story written by KB Kyoro, or KB-Bu is a recurring dream GJ Kyoro has, or they're both real in parallel universes.
The real reason for all these shenanigans is because the author switched publishers and had to find some way to wrangle back the intellectual property, while also fixing some regrets about the setting and characterization.
