This is nothing new. Imaishi has always been interested in CGI and it was already used excellently in TTGL and PSG. Not as consistently in KLK (but there were excellent scenes that used CGI), because its artstyle (dirty, gekiga linework, handpainted backgrounds with evident brush strokes) wasn't CGI friendly. But Promare looks like it will be the most accomplished effort yet.
Oh and of course there was Gridman, even if that's not Imaishi nor Sanzigen and the CGI was used in an entirety different way.

the fuck you talkin about? it was pretty damn obvious when cgi was used from how awkward and bad a scene would suddenly look, even if it was a little less shitty than what cgi could be in anime its still not what I'd ever imagine to be anywhere near excellent

Just in episode 1 there's that scene where Fukoroda throws hundreds of gloves that overflow the ring, as the camera circles around it.

There's some real stinkers (someone post the Satsuki casually running up a wall webm), but there's some moments where it really works quite well, like the intro to the first episode, with the student running down the stairwell and then being thrown outside.
Pretty much every anime they did after KLK did it better tho, that much is certain.

Anti and Nanashi had the best CG models in Gridman.

Nishigori knew what he was doing and the first cour was pretty nice. Considerably better and more exciting than Gridman as well except for ep 9 which was pretty much the only good gridman episode.
He just shouldn't have tried to wing the second half.
Maybe he'll learn from it or maybe not. In any case he could always return to being a character designer. No one can beat him in that respect desu.

Gridman successfully takes inspiration from Anno's and Tsurumaki's audiovisual vocabulary (and from many other sources) to craft its own identity. The homages are tasteful and amusing, like when they took advantage of the phone booth to simulate the 4:3 resolution.
You honestly cannot hope to claim FranXX to be the better show, I suggest you to give up.

KLK was more like Ryuko (chaotic neutral) and Satsuki (lawful neutral) eventually becoming chaotic good and lawful good to defeat Nui (chaotic evil) and Ragyo (lawful evil).
