There was major conflict and first and main studio war between Gainax fans and KyoAni at time - KyoAni won thanks to gainax desintegration, however what really killed it on Yea Forums was Gurren Laggan.

TTGL attrackted more kids than Naruto. This is what established the most cancerous newfag crossboarder/alien normalfag (or rather even litterally young gaya kids at time) fanbase.

After which followed TTGL which attracted even worse demographics and made trigger cancer explosing stinking mix of young kids and toilet humor cartoon Nickolodean/morning cartoon abomination.

LWA did little to change it, it just made that Trigger has two cancerous newfag fanbases: the said kids/cartoon aka ironic anime watchers and litteral tumblr/u/reddit LWA brough. KLK fed them both later.

Either way, at this point it is uncurable and nothing can save the studio and its fanbase. Kiznaiver was studio attempt to get out of the hole they dug themselves, but hated by said fanbase.

Because KyoAni stopped making CGDCT shows - litterally this. Godakobo is next best replacement, showing true love for the genre and their characters and also having good animation (50/50 chance since their B team sucks).

Those shows were incredibly popular and still regarded highly. The problem is that when discussing current KyoAni they're utterly pointless to bring up. Most of them are over 10 years old and even Hyouka is hitting 7 now.

Point is, even "good" studios can make a bad anime if it's handled by incompetent staff members, and even "bad" studios can make a good anime if it's handled by competent staff members.
Having the same studio doesn't guarantee that the same staff members that made the "good" anime on the previous seasons will be working on the next anime the studio is making.

FMA is without doubt a good anime, but its hardly showcase of Bones proweness. Considering same author other works were adapted in pretty much exact same visual style as FMA twice already by other studios. Wolfs Rain/Scrapped Princess was what made Bones a name, also now entirely forgotten - FMA just happened to be more successful. Following with Eureka 7 and Soul Eater, making Bones a prime studio for shounen anime, since in compariron Toei and likes were too low budget and cheap. Sadly, Bones is plagued by curse of mediocrity - while they can deliver higher production values than many, their output often is questionable and potentially good shows never reach true success.

In comparison say Madhouse made hundred of real crap anime, but in that hundred theres more than dozen real shining gems. Bones on other hand is just "above average" studio.

How do you determine "quality" of anime studio? It is actually very simple - ask a question, can Studio A make the same stuff Studio B does.

Which in the end filters out only two remaining studios:
1) KyoAni. KyoAni can do everything any other studio does if they wanted, and in better quality. No studio can make KyoAni anime even if they went all out and had all the budget and time.
2) Sunrise. Lazy cheap jews, but if want, can completely btfo every other studio in existence including KyoAni.

Production IG would be 3rd if modern production IG was not a total joke and commercial enterprise that lots all that made it special.

Bonus:
GoHands - none can emulate them, but most don't want to anyway.

As for "unique" studios that stand out due to own style i.e Shaft/Trigger etc. - its been proven many ties its very easy to emulate. Same as "best animation of any other studio" by hiring the freelancers they hired.

If they could, they would. They can't. KyoAni can take any Pierrot anime and remake it in better quality - both in terms of visuals, animation and direction.

Prime example - this season Bones will air "music" show.

Expect badly animated instruments and playing them (already displayed in PV) and performances. Why? Because they lack an autism and amount of work Kyoani put into researching and perfecting theirs.

Yeah, KyoAni is just superior. Their superior business model allows them to properly schedule their shows and deliver a much more superior product to the customer. KyoAni has shown other studios how to actually be successful, but they refuse to follow in KyoAni's footsteps.

KyoAni has shown studios the road to salvation but they are just too risk averse to actually travel down that road.
