Without Eremika, what's Mikasa's purpose in the story?

I don't understand it. EM is basically the whole reason for why Mikasa exists. If Isayama doesn´t make it canon, what's her purpose apart of being the character who is in love and saves the MC when he's in danger? I don´t believe Isayama emphasized her feelings for nothing, that's why I think EM will be canon in the end
