Netero's battle with him basically showed us that trying to best him in a contest of martial prowess was simply delaying the inevitable. You missed the point of Netero striking fear into Meruem's heart with his words, as well as the subsequent kamikaze attack, and so you overestimate him.
He would have saved Komugi and himself if it were within his ability, but a small, relatively low budget nuke ensured Meruem failed to enact his grandiose ambitions, and the damage dealt to him reveals a higher quality one would have snuffed any CA outright.
Although they did make significantly better Nen users than humans, the Ants together reached a B level threat to humanity and were never as threatening as the V6 (a B+ threat).
Maybe you should re-read or re-watch HxH.

I agree it's the weakest writing in the series so far, not only is the Hisoka vs Spiders the worse, most basic and pedestrian storyline so far but it's true that as much as i like the actual Succession War, it's just too complex to work out in the end. The Spider/Mafia thing just makes it all the more problematic.
There has never been anything like that in the history of manga, no precedent, even 20th Century Boys didn't have a single arc as complex.

I believe a theme of this arc that has come multiple times is the hypocretical worth of the lives before a figure of power.
We get Chrollo and his spiders and Kurapika with his group of Hunter association members and close friends being the outliar of leaders who do not see their people like disposible pieces.
Camila, Morena, Benjamin, hell even Halkenburg's ability to an extent, all reflect how little they value the lives of those who are subjected to them. It's an interesting contrast.
Kurapika revlealing himself as a specialist as a tactic to get everyone else to divolgue their nen typing to him was smart, and now Kurapika is descending into being more "evil". Kurapika's values are at stake and he might be forced to use his new group of nen students as pawns as well.

Are you referring to the connection passage that each mafia has to their own prince? There is nothing convenient about that, and the mafia will let the Spiders use it only if they do a favore for them (kill morena).

The Morena chapter is a key to understand how Togashi is planning to merge the two. Its about Balance, go re-read that chapter and then read the King of Kakin's speech about the succession war and his talk with Halkenburg.

Kachou and Fuu are detained, so they'll be prime targets for Camilla's assassins and might escape to the lower tiers, Zhang Lei went to visit O'Nior just as the Spiders were allowed into Tier 4, and Tserriednich said that he plans to settle things regarding the Mafia War with Morena, so he is likely to visit her in the future. Probably by the time the Spiders are allowed into Tier 3.
That is at least 20% of the plotlines converging nicely.
Add the fact Hisoka might be a Hei-Li if Togashi wants to kickstart the arc.

This. The thing that most struck me most about HxH is how the entire Chimera Ant arc felt like one long work of literature, like a 19th century baroque novel or a Shakespearean tragedy. It's rife with symbolism, irony, themes, and felt appropriately mature and tonally rich. Some of the passages spoken by the narrator were so beautiful and memorable (e.g. the humans in the sky line), and the narration served to create the feeling that I was reading some intricate tapestry of prose. I loved how tragic and anticlimactic the death of Meruem was, because it was richly meaningful in tandem with the themes presented by the arc; and it's because of this that I speak of him in the same way I do as Macbeth, or Oedipus, or John Milton's Lucifer. Some scenes, like the match-cut of the boots stomping on the insects between the Rose bomb used on human cities spoke to me on a visceral level, just as Classic Lit does.

Meleoreon said Gon was like an animal with "no limit to what he would do", and Wing was afraid that teaching Gon nen might have been creating a monster. There's a reason Killua thought Gon would overlook him being a murderer and an assassin.
Gon is a commentary on the Goku/shonen archetype. His character explores what separates humans from animals. It's considerably more complex than anything else ever published in Shonen Jump.

For starters, Hisoka is gonna fight Chrollo on his own terms, killing his fellow members one by one leasing Chrollo no one to rely on by using their abilities.
