Akio was Utena's prince, and she was in love with him. Ultimately it was false of course, but she truly did believe he was her prince, therefore she was genuinely in love with him.

Ping Pong is close to a 1:1 adaption, Crybaby is a reinterpretation of the manga according to Yuasa's sensibilities, more akin to Kemonozume than to the original. There no point to this comparison.
