Not to mention, the author cut the mandatory school time from the usual 3 years to just 2 years(which not an inherently bad thing if the author knew where they wanna go from there but we've all already seen this is not the case), when it could be the perfect place for some character developments.

Do people actually like "dungeon-building" type stories?
I've read a ton of 'em, but the only one I've stuck with long term seems to be Lazy Dungeon Master, and I'm not sure why, besides the author being honest with his fetishes, and Keima being rather creative with what he has.

Outside of that, I couldn't really stand "Hisshou Dungeon" or "Demon Kings Urban Development" beyond maybe an arc or two, and others are even more meh.
And yet, I really like the idea of it. It's basically turning a cave into an RTS against the world, which is a neat story idea, but execution seems to be rather poor.

Any ideas on what are good points to keep or drop if I wanna try writing something in this area?

Depends on what you expect from something to be "good".
I like it, but it's admittedly silly in a lot of aspects. It doesn't have an overarching plot, and it sometimes seems the author makes up arcs as he writes 'em, but at the same time I feel he's kinda clever in how he takes advantage of the systems he's set up.

It's not high literature, but it's fun, which is more than I can say for some other WNs I've read.
