I thought that episode was funny because of how Amuro actually fucked them all over at the end and threw away their only chance at defending themselves.

Like everyone else I think gundam 0079 is a great place to start. But I understand it is old and looks its age. Every mecha fan should watch it eventually. But good beginning shows would be any new gundam not apart of what's called the universal century timeline, gurren lagann, or watch evangelion.

They are pretty similar but Gundam has elements that would be more appealing to the average teenager/young adult. First the characters are more archetypal and well defined, the plot focuses more on the positive building of the main cast and their relationships, the antagonists are more intriguing. In addition there is a suggestion of a larger and more detailed setting with it's own technology and politics. Finally its tone and overall message are more generic and uplifting.

My favourite moment is when Amuro tells everyone he's got a good feeling about the final battle and that everything will turn out well. When he's in the elevator Kai asks him if he was serious and Amuro tells him he was just saying that to make everyone less afraid and that newtypes can't magically see the future.
That's only in the movie though.

I thought the blurays themselves removed the grain. I don't know what encode I have but I'll download EG's and compare. Are EG's subtitles good? I remember some Gundam encodes have trash subs and that the official ones are the recommended ones. I think those are EG.

I loved hearing Amuro talk about improving the gundam and remaining interested in how it worked throughout the show.

I don't think so. 16mm can scale up to 1080p but a lot of stuff still has issues even with that. Mostly with special effects, and I've seen that be a problem with rescans of old TV series. Of course you could scan it at 4k but I don't think it would give you any real benefit over 1080p. 35mm can look good at 4k though. Gundam already looks kind of blurry at 720p without stretching it to a 1080p screen so I don't think watching it in 1080p is really worth it.

Victory had a lot of issues but Tomino got it back together with Turn A. Most stuff after Turn A is shit but I enjoyed G-Reco to some extent. AU Gundam has always been shit.

Reminder that the only true Zeon is Char's Neo-Zeon, and the warmongering actions of other Zeonic movements were unrelated to the ideology. Char's Neo-Zeon had full moral righteousness in attempting to drop Axis, too.

The first episode left one hell of an impression, seeing all this genuine loss of life and the tragedy of Amuro accidentally blasting his father off into space. It set the tone that this would be one hell of a serious, tragic war and the kids being in charge of the White Base wasn't meant to be cool, but spoke of their hardship.

Amuro's AWOL period was really good too.
