I'll start with an obvious one. In this scene of Hunter x Hunter, one of the character's transformation (Tsubone) has its roots in early 1900s literature with the works of Franz Kafka. Kafka made his name by writing literature that begged the question of identity and asking the question, "what makes you-you?" or "How much would you have to change before you stopped being you?" These themes are particularly palpable in works like "The Metamorphosis".
Togashi admired Kafka's writing so he implemented the gilf-cycle. You see Tsubone has given her entire life to protecting the Zoldycks and their ensuring there well being. This goal has consumed her identity and she is nothing more than a tool, or a vehicle if you will, for the Zoldycks to push the success of their offspring. Togashi then brings the Kafkaesque elements in by literally making Tsubone into a motorcycle, thus literally and figuratively making her a tool for the Zoldyck family. The idea is that someone who has been completely disembodied from their true physical form still has a sense of self, a kernal of Tsubone's soul that is unwavering.

Well, it's not just that. When there is an obvious Hegelian aspects of Meruem. Why Hegel one might ask? I found an unmistakable parallel between the character development of Meruem and Hegel’s thoughts on self-consciousness.
Let me shortly explain - for those not familiar with this - Hegel’s theory of self-consciousness. For Hegel, the most primitive form of consciousness is certainty at the level of sense experience. It is the experience of “this” or “here” rather than classifications like red or round. Hegel noted that, “self-consciousness…cannot exist in isolation. If a consciousness is to form a proper picture of itself, it needs some contrast.”
This all sounds similar to those who have witnessed Meruem’s character arc, as he first began as a being that merely satisfied his basic desires – sense-certainty and the particular rather than the universal. This is evident in the way he forcibly ripped himself out of his mother’s womb and immediately embarked on a search for food. According to Hegel, Meruem would be in the first stage of self-consciousness at this point. It is interesting to take note of the fact that Meruem did not speak very much during the first few days after his birth. He was simply performing whatever action seemed to satisfy his desires rather than reflect upon his actions or himself through language, which Hegel believes is juxtaposed with desires – desires are subjective and language is universal.
Sure enough, when we begin to see more of Meruem’s inner dialogue and conversations with other people he isn’t merely focused on his primal desires anymore. He has arrived at the next stage of self-consciousness. This is when we see him classifying human beings and chimera ants according to their properties. He is now interested in the differences between those who possess Nen and those who do not.

While i don't dispute artistic value of Rick and Morty (lack of competence in subject, you see)
The themes are extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of human morality most of the philosophy will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Gon’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy is a deconstruction of shonen for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these fights, to realise that they’re not just strategic, - they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Hunter x Hunter truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Hisoka's existential catchphrase “Bungee Gum has the properties of rubber and gum,” which itself is a cryptic reference to his favorite brand of chewing gum. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated One Piece fans scratching their heads in confusion as Togashi’s genius wit unfolds itself on their Weekly Shonen Jump. What fools.. how I pity them.
