I'm here to clear up any confusion about Gohan being a so-called "pacifist" in the Cell Games...

It's a shitty ass pull that made Gohan's "fight" with Cell even worse than it already was. The only thing similar Gohan ever exhibited in the past was a reluctance to fight out of fear when he was like 5 years old. He was never a pacifist and to claim anything of the sort after the past couple of years of his life as well as the fact that he was training to defeat Cell with his father just make it even more bullshit.

Buu arc Gohan is far more entertaining.

I suppose if Cell just wanted a bout to see who was stronger Gohan and Goku would have been more accommodating from the start.

Gohan wasn't a pacifist in the Cell Games, nor is that what the story is trying to convey. He was nervous and cautious against Cell due to the sudden pressure put on him, hence why he was on the defensive. When it comes to Gohan's speech to Cell shortly afterward, him saying he doesn't like to fight or kill isn't him trying to push a pacifist agenda, it's him trying to tell Cell that he seeks no personal satisfaction in the fight. He's trying to make Cell believe that he will die if this fight continues, and that since Gohan doesn't have a desire to fight or kill Cell, the whole fight is meaningless because neither party will benefit from it.

It's not that Gohan didn't understand the importance of the fight and thus thought it was unnecessary, he only said that to Cell in a timid attempt to get him to back off. He knew damn well what was at stake, he was just trying to convince Cell that fighting wouldn't prove beneficial for either of them because Cell will die, and Gohan has no strong desire to see him dead or anything.
