I liked the shot of the ISS moving across the moon, and Episode 10 was probably the best out of the lot. Otherwise it was a twisted fever dream of a season that gutted much of what was loved about season 1.

Serval got chomped by a Cerulean or something between seasons and lost at least most of her memory of Kaban. Kaban is living separated from Serval and pretending not to know her. At the end Serval is implied to at least somewhat remember Kaban but is friends with Kyururu now so she goes with her instead. What happened after they left the island in S1 i also never mentioned. Also, Kaban apparently treats Bossu like just a tool now and has a drawer full of lucky-beast watches.

Wolf and domestic dog would’ve been a better combo than serval and caracal. Wouldn’t have been a shameless repeat of the first season, and they could’ve explored themes about the wild side of animals vs the tame side, which was something they kept hinting at with tiger but never did anything with. S2 is so bad that fans are literally making their own instead, starting by fixing Kyururu's garbage character design. And with how popular KF1 got, it's very likely that they got a tiny bit too cocky and started making demands and got greedy.

Kemono Instinct shows that it's possible to create a great Kemono Friends story without Tatsuki being involved. It's true that he set the foundations for success and provided a set of building blocks for new stories to be created though, but Tatsuki not being involved in S2 wasn't necessarily the death blow (albeit a slap in the face for all his hard work and dedication).

Thing is, S2 dug up those foundations, melted down those building blocks and left a twisted heap of debris in its place, seemingly for the sake of destroying everything that had come before, and going "Look, tanoshii! That's why you're here, right? Never mind any deeper themes about friends caring for each other, or digging deeper into the mystery behind wtf happened at the park and where all the humans went, or anything like that, or resolving anything that happened in S1."

Who knows, but something tied into the disaster presumably. One total speculation: the other friends are from actual animals right, living creatures. That's what the normal sparkly sandstar reforms right? But human hair or remains isn't actually alive, though it's also not fully inorganic like the rocks "sandstar low" (I forgot the exact name, the black particles though) turns into ceruleans. Maybe creating a human Friend from remains actually isn't easy, or maybe it takes a rare combination of both kinds of sandstar. And that would have been blocked by the shield until it malfunctioned. There are a lot of things you can debate about sandstar anyway. What happens when a cerulean turns a non existent animal (Tsuchinoko) or an extinct animal (Mammoth) into their original form? Does it make the impossible exist? Does it raise the dead?

In my headcanon Kaban didn't turn back into a hair for the same reason she's able to start growing her clothes back in the end. The Cerulean didn't finish eating her so she didn't lose all her sandstar.

It's hard to catch for western viewers because you spend most of your time looking at the bottom of the screen to read the subs, but the animation in S1 is high level. Not because it's Pixar level, but because of the attention to detail. The little things Tatsuki does breathes life into the characters and the world that surrounds them.
