Later in college Nadeko refers to her as an oddity that is capable of healing herself by repeatedly hurting herself, which is later explained by her as facing her own misery and repainting in new colors. So basically she took an extreme approach of facing her demons and ended up taking control of her life by the time she was out of college.

It might be callous of me to say that I very much don't get Crab's problems. If I honestly believed the person I was dating would take advantage of such a situation just to cheat on me I wouldn't be dating them in the first place - and even if I were in such a situation, because, let's face it, that's not a universal rule, I would never place my insecurities over the physical and emotional well-being of someone so hurt and disadvantaged. At the very least I would be more understanding if the arc was about her getting over her hangups rather than letting her stay that way.
Of course, it doesn't help that as time goes on Crab feels more and more like a distraction from what's genuinely compelling about Monogatari. Her presence feels more shallow and petty with subsequent appearances.
