My point was that the show really didn't do a good job of working with any of those.
It went from trying to be a mecha to having the mecha elements be background filler and being mainly about romance, to the point that power of romance is a thing, then tries to shoehorn barely developed character into a mc role, later commenting that it was a multi-protagonist drama.
It just feels tonally inconsistent and chaotic.

But it was retconned to have no relevance to their backgrounds and why they act look and act the way they do and instead we get the most boring and half assed lore that barely touches on why the fuck APE/Papa has the medieval shit, why in the fuck does 001 understand English, wears a fucking crown, and why doesn’t want a better, what does Virm have to make them think they have a better chance against 001 (like holding someone she loves), and how 02’s failed clone momma even got the information about fairytales and love stories (like getting inspired by 001’s memories).

Of those, Ichigoro was probably the most "forced". Literally, in the end. Hir02 had that whole sweeping destined fairytale vibe going on. Mitsukoko was a lot more grounded in comparison, their scenes more subtle but still effective. I really like all three romances, though. It's what Franxx did best, why I'm still following the manga, and why I can't hate the show, no matter how poorly it handled other aspects.

They came off forced to me because we go from four straight episodes of them not even acknowledging each other after the switch to overdrive in three eps like it's bad fanfiction. Your example is a good point of how it spends more time being melodramatic and just hitting the high notes than grounding them as a couple, especially with how poorly the mindwipe is handled.
They didn't feel subtle or grounded at all though IMO in the second half. We go kiss, drama sex, marriage, mindwipe with no time to breathe and even Mitsuru looking like he's getting dragged for the ride. At least we got reason and interaction in ep9 to understand how Goro felt and why.

To an extent. Love is more than just making your loved one happy, because that's just giving Kokoro what she wants like a parent giving their child a toy. It's also about understanding the meaning of that gift and all it's consequences. Not once do we have Mitsuru and Kokoro actually truly discuss having children and why it's important to her as a couple that wants children, something that as children who don't understand childrearing as we do, would actually talk about. As far Mitsuru making those decisions of his free will, I'd argue that he didn't. They were always pushed on him to a degree, because he's either looking like a deer in headlights or asking Hiro what to do or thinking its what Kokoro wants before the plot basically rushes him into it.

The waters lost their attention, no one (even Ichigo), remembered that Hiro was in the water. They were all distracted by the activities on the shore, whether by books, beach balls, or the sand. There was crudely drawn 16 on the shore, shouting, ‘Please, Papa, get me out of the here! The light burns!’ Ichigo and the boys were laughing at it, calling Zorome a genius.

As fun was stored on the shore, 02 silently came out of the waters. “Waiting for me, Darling?”

“Yeah. How did you hold your breath for that long?”

“Survival of the fittest!” She cheered. “Wanna try, Darling?”

“I think, I’ll pass.”

“Come on, I thought you wanted me?” She slowly swam away from him and towards deeper waters. She waved a hand to him, telling him to chase her.

Hiro drifted towards her and away from APE. It wasn’t long till he lost where his squad was and he was.

02 vanished. Hiro stopped himself from traveling further. He looked around and saw no signs of her. He heard some unnerving laughter that came from nowhere.

That's the best thing that could happen, honestly.

Hiro was all alone, only occupied by the deep water and his thin piece of protection. He felt something swimming around him. He lost his breath. He looked for any fins to pop out of the water. Any waves to warn him.

He lost any hope of finding its place. He instead thought to prepare for the its strike. He closed his eyes to meditate and closed his teeth for the incoming pain.

IT STRUCK HIRO!

Hiro froze, he felt its impact on his torso. Before he could move he felt two of its hands pulled down.

Hiro was now, trunk-less.

02 came out of the water, with a smug on her face.

“02?”

02 lifted one her hands off the water, wiggling Hiro’s swim trunks. “Come and get me.”

The horned girl quickly swam out of the ocean and cheerfully ran into the jungle.

‘What’s with this girl?’ Hiro thought. He didn’t notice his own smile.

The Ayys wouldn't have even been as much of a problem if they'd been properly foreshadowed/introduced earlier in the story. The terrible pacing at the end was the true villain.
