The tension at the end is insane, and Asuka's reaction to her imminent death struck me as an emotionally effective scene

If trivia helps, there was an abandoned idea for Asuka-centric episodes to be extreme environment battles. Her introduction was the fight at sea, then Asuka dangles on a cable again in front of a land shark, then Arael was a bird made of glowing knives because it was designed for her to melee in the air.

I think the reason people dislike Jet Alone is because it's kinda sandwiched inbetween two arcs, the Rei arc and the Asuka arc, so it feels like filler
But it actually is a very important episode that gives a lot of background on NERV as an organization

There is not so much to hate in eva, the show is simply so good. So contrarians chose one of the tiny bit weaker episodes and started hating it for attention.
IMO is a bad choice of episode, as it moves forwar the relationship of shinji and asuka and the action is pretty cool. Then again, there is no bad episode in eva
