promising first episode, but i don't think i'll like this more than the first adaptation. it seems to be taking a more grounded approach to the series, which i was hoping wasn't the direction it would take. reason being is that while this may benefit the emotional content, the framework is outlandish (likewise the humour is frivolous), so a more "realistic" approach is at odds with the general concept of "being hugged by a member of the opposite sex turns them into animals from the chinese zodiac. the first adaptation's major strength is playing up all the quirks while still maintaining the level of depth in the characters, i.e. knowing when to focus on either the comedic or emotional/melodramatic aspect and when to combine them. i have a feeling this new adaptation will try to stick to the same tone and in general be less erratic, which isn't necessarily bad but it's also not as interesting.

Kureno is the ultimate beta, maybe that's why he suffered that much.
He could have lived his own life, he could have formed a decent bond with Akito that doesn't involve pity, which would result in her learning her place a little bit more. She only used him to vent her frustration (sexually too), and he was okay with it. He was her ultimate enabler and never stopped her from doing the atrocities she did (except in book 18).

They just never really interacted. Ayame was probably kept away from Akito because he would have encourage her femininity or give her bad ideas. Hatori is basically Akito's daddy but he is too weak to stand up against her but knows someone has to so he let's Shigure do it.

Just started airing, this adaption is apparently going to be more accurate to the manga than the original anime was though.

Arisa+Kureno is shit because she will always be second place to Akito. If Akito started crying out for him and he feels is better for her to be with him, he would drop everything and stay besides her. The only reason he left her was because he realized he was toxic towards her. Literally everything he does is for Akito's wellbeing. That's why Shigure hates him so much because Kureno is the biggest obstacle in his plan.

Shigure had the best ideia (standing up against her authority, abuse, not being afraid of her and not giving a shit about the Juunishi bond) but sadly the way he approaches it are often childish and with mockery, which makes Akito angry.

Kureno never loved Akito, he just felt pity.

I figured he 'loved' her just as much as anyone else in the group of older kids (sans shigure), the fact that he was isolated from everyone until he was, what, 26? Makes it pretty reasonable to see why Akito was such a big thing in his life.

Also from what we saw he was basically just lying to himself about staying with Akito and broke down crying saying that he wanted to see Arisa again. By the end everything was pretty much solved anyway, so leaving the family completely was easy shit comparatively.

Shigure originally wanted to isolate her from everybody to the point where she would not have a choice but to be with Shigure because she is so clingy and lonely which is a completely terrible thing to do to someone else. His plan changed a bit after meeting Tohru because now he was thinking about Akito's wellbeing and freeing Akito from the curse for her sake even if she didn't choose him at the end. He still set a lot of people on fire in order to do it so is not like he became an angel

As it is though, he and Hatori both knew that the curse was going to break within their generation anyway, Shigure just wanted to speed it along.

Of course he loves her the way he would love a little sister. Then he became depressed because he was trapped but that doesn't mean he doesn't love Akito. Still doesn't change the fact that Arisa is going to be number 2 for decades

I think Yuki x Tohru belongs to the old fashioned "pure girl defrosts school idol" shojo style, and Kyo x Tohru was a bit more modern. Both are good, but Takaya was not trying to write a typical shojo story, and that becomes obvious as it gets darker.

Though it was a very innocent childhood thing, and he fell in love with Rin when he was still a kid too, so it's not like it really lasted that long.

I say 'light' since it never really goes anywhere, Yuki treats it like an annoying joke most of the time, as does the rest of the cast. Haru himself seems to just do it as a term of endearment at the current time of the manga.

Shigure and Ayame was definitely the more overt one, though that was also %99.9 a joke they do to creep other people out and have a laugh.

I haven't read the manga in a long time, but I feel like either past the point where Yuki/Tohru meet up with Ayame and he makes Tohru dress up, or the point during the onsen chapter where Yuki and Tohru are talking at night ((whichever happens later in the plot)) were the last times I ever really saw their relationship as 'romantic' in nature at all.

Here is the scene just after the whole bakeneko stuff in volume 6 where Yuki realizes his true feelings for the first time, and is disgusted by them

Long running shoujo manga gives its supporting cast way more attention than the shounen romcom equivalent. In a lot of shoujo everyone ends up getting paired up.

The main theme of Fruits Basket is moving on from past trauma, especially trauma related to a parental abuse/ familial dysfunction. The Sohma are not only deeply dysfunctional, but dysfunctional precisely because they didn't move on. The zodiac spirits (and by extension the people possessed by them) were never allowed to end the part of the life where they were together-never got to meet new people who became important to them.

The zodiac members transforming when hugged by a member of the opposite sex (except for other zodiac members) isn't just some wacky anime bullshit- it's there to be a roadblock to forming relationships that might lead to one of them procreating and having their own family. They're not supposed to have a family of their own- the zodiac is their family.The real Sohma curse is that they're not meant to really have a life out side of each other and their shared history. The curse breaking coincides with Tohru showing up because she,either literally or symbolically, is the thing that breaks the Sohma out of that cycle. She's someone new.

The Sohma are insular and even incestuous by design. They're not supposed to interact much with outsiders: that's the whole point. Having the zodiac be outsiders initally (and you know, what about their parent? Every one of them for thousands of years was just cool with giving up their kids?) undermines a carefully constructed situation. And given that iirc the mangaka is pretty involved with this adaptation and she got mad at the last one for changing character designs there's no way she would let this change fly.

They really are! I've re-read it several times since it ended and its easier to pick up on these things in a re-read after you know the way the plot goes. It's a neat series.

Kureno's curse was broken pre-Tohru, yeah. The manga says that the strength of the curse was weakening because it has been such a long time; bird spirit just got sick of everything first I guess. That's why I threw that symbolically in there. Tohru's sort of a symbol of the end of the curse, not necessarily its literal cause.

Though I think the implication was that Akito intentionally freed the rest of the zodiac after Kureno and Momiji's broke? She finally saw how certain zodiac members thrived through their connection to Tohru and finally realized how the curse was holding everyone back and stopped being selfish. I think? The way it was presented read kind of ambiguous to me.

I do remember old nip fans shipping Shigure/Akito thinking it was BL, and once chapter 98 was out there was a small outrage between them. Some fangirls also hated Rin but this toned down as they got older.

I have bad news for you, the english scans online are not very good. It was mostly done by people who were following monthly back in the times and couldn't wait between official releases. I mean, they're not Vento Aureo tier bad but it's really obvious they were quickly translated and not checked properly.

If I remember correctly, multiple chapters were translated from Chinese scan, there were even Chinese text on it. Even so, the guy who translated those chapters didn't even understand most of the Chinese translation. So, double the errors.
