and Asuka calling Shinji pathetic as he flails about on the floor, begging for anyone to save him from his own self hatred and powerlessness to do or change anything, is one of the most iconic images of the series. She's telling him - and by extension, all the sad sacks of shit watching who can relate to or identify with him - that they're pathetic, disgusting wretches.
The show is supposed to be about learning to accept the fact that you need other people even if you will get hurt or hurt them in the process of knowing and learning about them, but this last viewing of it really made the self loathing aspect of the main characters stand out. They're all pretty fucking disgusting, in their own ways.

Well besides the terrible animation (yes, there are far better animated fights in Eva) it's a pure cringe fest and a pinnacle of bad taste.
Especially the perfectly synchronized movements. Those are not realistic and are just an expression of bad animation. It's like synchronized speaking, it's not cool, it's not classy, it's just bad taste.
In it's entirety the scene would just look like a bad amv with that music, but this absolutely garbage concept of synchronization of characters really makes this scene really bad.
