I just picked it up like a week ago and I already agree this is basically better than any other currently running big shounen and in fact better than many of the older big shounens before it.
Why is it not more popular, who knows.

Maybe Asta isn't whiny, emo and pathetic enough to draw in the demographic.
Maybe his negation power isn't flashy enough, or maybe the medieval fantasy setting has been over done.
Could be that most of the characters don't stand out enough and look kind of like background characters.
It's hard to tell really.
The anime is ok but the OST feels weak and I haven't seen any big emotional memorable scenes yet, everything happens too fast and it lacks the typical shounen long internal monologues that happen while something else is going on and time seems to stop so the MC can grapple with his insecurities, goals and find his inner strength.
Shit just doesn't feel personal for the most part, which might be what the shounen audience in general wants, not a big story or a well built world or even important fights but simply for fights to have a personal aspect at stake and so far I'm not that far into the series but for the most part they just seem like mercenaries without anything personal on the way.
Maybe it lacks a really powerful first arc to draw people in for the long run?

Literally every single fight is animated terribly and has a horrible OST choice. The anime completely ruins any momentum and emotional impact the fights have in the manga. If you wanna try it then read it up to the end of Yami vs Licht. If you don't like it or care for it at that point then drop it. Although the team oriented battles dont start until the arc after that.

There's some nice background lore to it, that's what I'm reading for. Under used characters who are just there for gags etc are also a problem (but then turn out to be super special/rare/OP). It's popularity problem I think stems from it's mediocrity, it's not so bad it's good, but it's not ground breaking or sufficiently unique to draw readers from older series. I have no clue if this is a generation defining series.
The action is meh, I have other issues with it (pretending early on that some characters could only offense/defense/support, doing two or three was rare/impossible), incredible vagueness with elemental rock-paper-scissors (instances of lolDontCareMyManaIsMaximum). Again being a mana based world, we have no clue on what cost spells have, how fast the MP regens, attempts are made to use it for tension building, but it doesn't really jive.

I agree the circumstances of it are terrible, the fact is it was foreshadowed. It would have been better handled over the training arcs where Deku talks to AM/GT (and all the others who know the truth) about the previous users, the powers they had etc. They had to fucking know 1+1=2 etc, it's Toshi who was the powerless fuck who could only use one power (technically two, because he can PASS THE POWER ON and use super strength). It's handling of 'awakening' each power now, just because Deku is 9th in line was terrible.

By getting the series signature 'convenient powerup when needed'. Also because royal and innately higher than most mana/output. No training, learning etc. Just a straight up desperation powerup coupled with lineage.
