I know digimon tri did a full replace on the kids when only a couple of them were unavailable (while keeping the digimon's voices), sometimes full turnover is just a way to distance the new version from the original, or mixed new/old casts feel weird.

I decided to watch this then the first episode of the first anime, and its an almost 1:1 remake. I wish the show slowed down a bit more. I'm a fan of fruits basket already, but I can definitely see why someone would be put off by the first episode. Characters speak very unnaturally and there was a bit too much exposition. Would have liked to see some time before Tohru finds the Soma household or befriends Yuki even if those scenes didn't happen in the manga or first anime.
I think Nana is better. Characters feel more real and act more natural. I pretty much only watch shonen and seinen, but Fruits Basket and Nana so far have been my only exceptions and I like them both a lot.
Any episode involving Hatsuharu and Momiji. I like seeing those characters interact, but Shigure is still easily the best character from this manga.

I actually remember thinking she was boring now that you say that. 3. Ren was a maid and most likely a Soma if she was allowed to know about the zodiac. Other zodiac members pumped out kids before including the previous cat, so we can just assume that they prefer cowgirl over doggy style.
4. It's destiny. The vaguely defined "higher god" is implied by the ending to have a hand in what zodiacs are born and prior to Fruits Basket, they never gathered every member in one period before. We don't know how but one way or another it was decided that all of them would be born and the cycle would be broken in the current time. Inevitability is a major theme in the series.

The whole thing has been “translated,” though - the subs are just legendarily bad after the midway point.
