Pre-time skip arc showed Sakura to be extremely intelligent and had excellent chakra control. Post-time skip Sakura could have been developed to be Kabuto's foil, as a peerless healer and lethal fighter who can use her medical skill both to help people and kill them. However, anytime there was remotely a chance for Sakura to be developed, stuff goes to Shino, Shikamaru, Hinata or someone else. I like to think Kishi failed Sakura very badly.

Put her on a lower tier team. She's never going to look good compared to chosen one god beasts like Nauto and Sasuke.

Much like Krillin, Sakura having excellent control over her energy just doesn't feel flashy enough to wow readers. The audience wants all flash and pizazz with no substance

Sakura's big problem stems from the very start of the manga.

She's completely devoted to one character on the team (The moody loner), and in a series where all of these ninjas have these special unique abilities, she doesn't have any to speak of.

Sakura probably could have been a better character if she could at least do something in a fight. Say what you will about say, Tenten, but at least she had a gimmick to speak of.

Well, the problem is that if it isn't relevant to anything that isn't related to fighting, then it amounts to nothing. Most of the primary conflicts in this story are driven by combat.

I mean, look at Nami from One Piece. Everyone praises her for her navigation skills, because the series goes well out of it's way to make sure that her ability to tell a ship were to go are made really important, even though it has nothing to do with combat (until she gets the Perfect Clima Tact, but even then she avoids fighting if she can)

Sakura has the right skills to be a ninja: she's good a healing, using weapons, and super strength. The problem boils down to Naruto slowly shifting away from civilians trying to become ninja and into village politics mixed in with Filial Piety drenched Clans.

Change the writer from Kishimoto to somebody who doesn't suck at writing females.

Sakura needed an Akatsuki "nemesis". The rest of Team seven had an Akatsuki member that worked as their personal antagonist.

Naruto had Pain.

Sasuke had Itachi.

Kakashi had Obito.

And while not part of Team 7, Shikamaru even had Hidan.

Sakura didn't have an Akatsuki member to personally defeat.

People say Sakura should've gotten over Sasuke (which is reasonable) but it's worth noting that Naruto also never gets over Sasuke. At one point he says he'd rather die fighting him than give up on him (and by this point even Sakura wanted to kill Sasuke.) Orochimaru's actions had more lasting impact than Pain. He destroyed the Leaf, killed the Third Hokage, meddled in the Chunin Exams by allying with the Sand to form a coordinated assault, and is personally responsible for Sasuke defecting the village.

Despite that, Naruto didn't personally want to pursue Orochimaru until Sasuke was defected to him. Orochimaru barely acknowledged Naruto. He just wanted Sasuke as a vessel.

Gave her an element, particularly fire style. Gave her a unique ability and sage mode, like phoenix sage. That way they'd all have a unique fire ability (black fire, Naruto's fox fire, Sakura's healing fire) but she'd be able to "burn" chakra to make even more immense strength and heal rapidly basically becoming a super tank and super healer.

The problem is, Sakura was designed to be their main love interest (Hinata was the side girl for most of the series). There is nothing in her character that isn't about Sasuke. So, by getting her to get over him, it opens her character for new development.
But in the kino universe, where we have kino Sakura, she would:

Because the point of Sasuke's story was to be redeemed and Kishmoto realized if Sasuke killed anyone it would be the point of no return. That's why Neji and Choji didn't die in the Retrieval Arc. Kishimoto didn't want Sasuke to have bodies to his name.

He inherited all of Orochimarus followers (plus the ones he let out of the cages would be extremely loyal to him, it seemed like Kishimoto was originally going to have him have his own fighting force).

Just give Sasuke more consistent Powers, and a solid five man team then.

Sakura, like Sasuke, could be fixed just be extending the pre-chunin exams arc like it was originally supposed to be. Have team seven spend a lot more time together and go on more missions as genin. She's actually a perfrectly fine character with a complementary and interesting skillset, even as a genin. Her biiggest flaw, and the biggest flaw of all non-Naruto/Sasuke characters in the story is just a lack of screentime.

I think it works out that the three members of team seven all represent an immature aspect of Kakashi. Sasuke is the power of the sharingan, Naruto is raw strength and summoning, and Sakura is excellent chakra control and intelligence. It would take a little work to make her on-par with the rest of them, but you don't even really have to do that. She's BY FAR the most responsible and level-headed of the group. Sasuke is moody and obsessive, Naruto is an overly emotional idiot, and Kakashi is really flaky and inconsistent. She could be the sympathetic straight-man character in their various missions, focusing on how to actually complete the mission in a sane way while the other three of them fuck around doing their bullshit. At worst she'd still be baggage that guards the client/scroll/keeps watch/etc... while the other fight super-mutants or whatever, but she'd be a lot better than what we got.

Naruto is the type of person who would still honor the promise he made even if Sakura made attempts to move past Sasuke. I thought they did okay. She grew up, became a doctor, Saved a lot of people, Helped stall Kaguya in the last moment so the seal could work and kept Naruto alive long enough to get that far while also using up her chakra storage to locate Sasuke and pull him back to their dimension.

She legit did more than Kakashi in the war effort and the final battle.

Sakura actually ends up being the most legit female character of the series, despite starting off pretty flat in the first series, pun intended.

Should have gotten more screen time doing hospital stuff and training. Then again, we see pretty much none of Sasuke's training and nobody cares.

On the other hand Hinata's character is super flat, and most of the other girls are pretty simple caricatures. It's just the author seems to know so little about women and girls, and didn't bother to get help or do extra research until maybe very late in the story. I'd say if there was a shift it happened when Kurenai got pregnant. Still, the whole series treats women as highly domestic with a few exceptions.

Ultimately my take on it is they have bigger problems most of the time. They live in a war torn world where every day could be your last and they're all pretty desperate for all kinds of reasons that mostly relate back to that fact. Go back like two to three generations and you'd see kids marrying kids and reproducing as soon as possible just to keep clans going with the high mortality rates. If this was for real Sasuke would have been studded out. Literally. It could have even been counted as another reason he left.

I never watched anime and didn't need it to end up disliking her from the beginning. The fact that every time her character had progress, topic of Sasuke returned at convenient time to make her go backwards. After 700 chapters of manga all Sakura gained were abilities, while personality returned to how she acted towards Sasuke at the beginning of the series.

Something that he can bond with Sakura considering her "Second" nature would be Water as well. So she could contribute to the training by teaching him water style. Yamato could hint to Sakura having wood style if Kishimoto went with the plant based arsenal given her namesake instead.

How to fix her. After the Chunin exam when she gets called out for spending more time on her hair than training have her take it to heart. Have her actually lose to Ino in battle. She tries to complain to Naruto but he doesn't have any time listen to her as he needs to train. The Chunin exams are a eye opener for her and she decides to train seriously.

Her training becomes a background fact but while she trains she starts to rethink a lot of things. She starts wondering why she even likes Sasuke in the first place and her training sometimes with Hinata and Ino has her realize that she's missing out by obsessing over Sasuke.

When Sasuke chimps out and attempts to fight Naruto she comes in and hits both Naruto and Sasuke calling out Naruto for using rasengan and letting Sasuke get to him and Sasuke himself for starting the fight in the first place. He retorts by calling her weak and rather than make her cry she acknowledges it pointing out that they haven't been genuine for even a year yet. Sasuke still leaves and Naruto goes after him.

When the retrieval team comes back beaten and she finds out that Sasuke left in his own accord she becomes resentful to him.

Tsunade opens her medical school and the females from the rookie 9 all attend thinking that that knowledge would be good to have.

Unlike Sakura, Hinata had little to no reason to give up on her affection for Naruto since he never outright rejected her, and even had encouraging gestures towards her even if they weren't necessarily romantic (i.e. the I like people like you back in part I, taking her hand in part II etc).

Even with the power of the Strength of the Hundred nearing completion, Sakura would just barely be able to keep up with Second Stage Susanoo while Sasuke is forced to admit that she's strong.
>Before they go any further, Kakashi would step in and use Kamui to stop Sasuke from possibly fatally wounding Sakura after she left her guard down.
>Kakashi vs Sasuke happens and is long but ends on Third Stage/Complete Susanoo and Sasuke nearly going blind. Sakura takes advantage of this and nearly goes for the kill but at the last second couldn't while Sasuke stabs her. Sakura tries while Sasuke comes to terms that he now understand what Itachi felt when killing his family and comrades as Sakura falls to the ground half-dead. Possibly coming to terms that he has or had feelings for her.
>Naruto comes to the sight and feeds Sakura enough of his chakra so her seal can reactivate and heal her, perhaps upgrading it further while hinting at Naruto's skill at giving/synchronizing with another's chakra.

She'll start losing and then unlock the Byakugo like it happened in the final fight, then she'll win and that's about it. She was completely fine with her healing role(healed the entire alliance, saved Nardo's life) and in the Kaguya fight

TLDR - Sakuya-hime is a japanese gddesss from the tales of Konohana Sakuya-hime that guards Mt. Fuji. Long story short it's a dumb love story mythos but apparently in some tellings of Tale of the Bamboo Cutter aka Kaguya's story she is involved in it. Mainly to stop the King's men from throwing the elixir to the volcano in Mt Fuji believing that will cause destruction.

And another theory talks about Sakuya/Sakura being the sacrificial lamb to Kaguya but I can't find the thread that mention that crackpot mythos.

Naruto taught me so much of Asian mythos that I hate it now.

Part I Sakura is mostly fine. Show her actually training after the Chunin exams, maybe. Her general ineffectiveness, particularly failing to prevent Sasuke from leaving, is treated as her tragic backstory from now on.
For part II, make her resentful of Sasuke. She's opposing Naruto on bringing him back and wants to take him out instead. She blames herself for the retrieval team getting hurt, which ties in with her medical training.
Saving Gaara and search for Sasuke remain largely unchanged beyond Sakura's different motivation. Following getting their asses handed to them by Sauske, Sakura starts researching Uchiha clan and step by step uncovering the truth behind the massacre. This is her tie-in to the main plot of the story from now on.
After Pain's invasion, she finds herself recruited by Danzo to accompany him to the Five Kage summit. He had noticed her digging around and wants to keep an eye on her. Possibly feeds her lies to heat up her hatred of Sasuke.
Sasuke attacks the summit and Sakura goes in for the kill. This is treated as her crossing the line. Sakura fails, but not due to "I can't do this!" bullshit. Naruto calls her out on her murderous intent and she starts reconsidering where revenge is gonna lead her.
Sakura keeps working on the Uchiha case in the background. With Karin's recent knowledge of Sasuke and moral support, possibly. After getting the whole picture she realizes that Sasuke has been a puppet the entire time.
In the war arc, instead of zombie Itachi, it's Sakura that reveals the truth to Sasuke and they team up to successfully take down Kabuto.
Sakura acknowledges that her hatred of Sasuke came from blaming herself for her weakness and they resolve to let bygones be bygones. Their relationship can still evolve into love in the epilogue, just have it feel more... equal.

Note that it gives NO powerups for Sakura compared to the original. There's no need for them. Itachi stays dead, no Edo Tensei-ing him.

In the write-up, I've tried to have Sakura integrated into the main plot and consistently excersizing her own agency througgout part II. I didn't want to take the story in a whole different direction either. Getting her into Uchiha stuff was the easy way out.

The sad truth is that her focus on Sasuke is the sole reason for why her character exists. Outside of Sasuke she has no real connection to the actual story itself and no reason to even receive any focus since in universe she's a literal who.

It is also ironically simultaneously the thing that hurts her character as it makes her into an unlikable cunt.

You could reasonably say that she uses her chakra countrol to make up for the lack of discipline and raw strength she has while still giving her the ability to have interesting fights that revolve around close combat.

Have her lose to Sasori. Sasori turns her into a puppet with flamethrowers in her hands, poisoned metal rope, helicopter blades and so forth. Have Chiyo sacrifice herself to make her come to life again, but she still retains puppet body, Gaara just did not die in this version of the story.

Focus on her after that and her complex about costing Chiyos life and having a puppet body that will never have Sasukes children. Have her get over Sasuke when they met again and have her put up a fight against him after he owned Team 7, by embracing the advantages of her newfound body.

Just generally have her be useful and closer in-power to Sasuke and Naruto afterwards as well as fixing her emotional issues and Tsunade does not just recover from her post-Pain exhaustion; Sakura actively heals her.

Should have been canon, dammit.

Being that this is shonen, I think it is asking way too much for her to be truly relevant, useful, etc. beyond the sideline/support. If she's going to be a cheerleader, the cheapest strategy is to maker her fawn like a retard over the MC. That tends to please the wider audience without much effort.

Just not having her fawn over Sasuke after his bad treatment would help with general appeal. Extra respect if her character was capable of appreciating and eventually returning Lee's feelings (the guy could definitely use a high tier medic after pulling stunts with the gates). Way too much heat riding on the guy.

Again, it is just asking too much to let her be a real contender with her early promise regarding genjutsu, chakra control (beyond punching harder), intellect (traps), etc. Developing combat prowess to actually land her strikes would probably count for a lot. Versatility like using medical ninjitsu to fight (like another fellow) would give her another edge. Even the weird 'inner self' probably should have stuck around.

Ultimately, this series very much became about special abilities (and lineage), so she didn't have much of a chance as part of the main team (just the girl of the group). It isn't even like she got to do much with the slug when it was finally hers. Learned to cure a neat poison, but didn't get around to making and using her own to at least slow her foes enough to land her brute force attacks more easily.

NOTE: The most damning things are probably her tsundere traits being turned up a notch or so (anime going way overboard with the gag of her hitting Naruto in particular) and the ass flattening she got.

In the chunin exams, Sasuke becomes the defacto leader( he's pretty much the protagonist of the arc), naruto is basically the bruiser blunt force in the group and sakura is brains. Just make her into the analyst of the group, using her encyclopedic knowledge of ninja stuff to figure out enemy jutsu.
She should have been fighting one of the Pains attacking the leaf village and figuring out their abilities.

It's very simple. Every action shounen works the same way. A character is only relevant if they are strong fighting characters. The way most shounen keep weaker characters relevant is by giving them some gimmick power or by making them use "brains" instead of brawn. Shikamaru is weak as shit in the naruto world but he's essentially a main character because he's a smart strategist. Make Sakura shikamaru.

Sakura was literally Tsunade when she was younger. Down to the way Tsunade interacted with Jiraiya. Kishimoto letting Sakura train under Tsunade was one of the few things he did right.

Sakura's powers are fitting for her personality and role as a healer and nin who was Tsunade's pupil, but one of the things that she did needed was extra focus training in acquiring Hundred Seal, imo.

No interesting character dynamic with anyone. Non-existent family simply because they don't matter. No sympathetic elements to make you root for her, besides maybe crying about being too shit I guess. Has a rivalry to parallel the hero's but it lacks any weight and involves two shallow girls competing for the dick of a guy who doesn't give a shit about either of them. She finally gets some mad skills by being a Tsunade clone but could never ever ever measure up to da boyz, and worse thing is Kishi just kept rubbing that fact in everyone's faces.

After getting wrecked, Tsunade gives her a bunch of do-it-yourself projects which mostly involve having to match the Leaf's old brutal-as-hell wartime training methods, which mostly involve having pink being forced to reach out to her peers for training (participating in Guy and Lee's early morning runs, survives some high-level genjutsu resistance 'courses' ect). After she's basically improved in every way, Tsunade... could still basically reject her, or try and convince her to study under more conventional medic-nins in order to sideline her, and only starts to train her after she makes sure that she want's to become better for herself.
Also, she basically needed some sort of side plot. If she had a group of friends who were basically normal leaf villagers who she slowly grew more alienated from over the course of the series starting with after Wave country that's basically fix a lot of her personality problems, as is she didn't have many friendly relationships in Part 1.

I would actually suggest making Sakura's enemy Orochimaru, maybe make him stay a member of Akatsuki or rejoin it. How would this work? Simple, Sakura and Orochimaru are both medical ninja, to a degree. Play off this. That's not a theme, that's a goal. For example, in BnHA Midoriya wants to become a hero, but the theme itself is "what does it mean to be a hero?" Best I can think of for Naruto is "acceptance". Both Naruto and Sasuke deal with that theme of finding acceptance and a place in the world. The problem is that Sakura contributes very little to that theme.
