Honestly the early episodes after Asuka's introduction really hampers the show overall.
It grinds the story to a halt with wacky monster of the week hijinks which also leads to it being a tonal clash with the rest of the show.
On rewatch it is a part of the show I either skip or zone out during.

I think that even if other people came back, Shinji and Asuka would trust eachother more than anyone else. They would sooner latch onto what's familiar (awkward as their earlier interaction was) than form a new relationships with strangers.

Only in ooc fanfictions, their dynamic is a destructive one, it's the whole point.

I think what most Eva fans have problem with is that Eva doesn't really show these characters getting out of their shells and successfully interacting with others. The message is that we should get along with eachother despite the pain interpersonal relationships cause, but the show and movie don't give us examples of such interaction being done right. It gives hope but also leaves viewers with happiness blueballs.

It'd be easier for Shinji to trust Asuka again, as ironically she was not directly behind any serious emotional harm done to him over the series.

But Asuka would have a hard time getting past all of what she would percieve as bitter betrayals. His lack of help or action when she needed it most - after Arael and in the MP Eva fight, in paticular. He also had stopped talking to her after Zeruel, and when she sees him happily talking to Rei it just reinforces her idea that the people she wants care from will prefer a "doll" over her.
And on the flip side when he is in a bad state after killing Kaworu or as 3I begins, he just comes crawling to her to beg for help and expects the help when she is still in a state where she needs his help more.

I guess she could see that in a twisted sense Shinji was willing to kill the whole world over her, but I doubt that came off as a romantic gesture to anyone involved.

I just finished this series for the third time last night; watched EoE with my gf. I have two questions left in my mind from this viewing:
1)When Asuka awakens Unit 02 and starts wrecking shit in EoE, she says she finally understands that her AT field was her mom all along. Kaworu said in EP24 that the AT field is each person's mental barrier that separates them from one another. Was Asuka mistaken, and driven by a false sense of love from a mother who in fact hated her all along? I know Yui was made into/fused with Unit01; was Asuka's mom also apart of her Eva? Or was she delusional?
2) How did Ritsuko's mom die? She was strangling loliRei, but then fell to her death. Was she shot (by Gendo, i would assume) or did she actually fall during the struggle?

I get what your saying but at the same time part of the reason this show is so iconic is because it doesn't profess to have all the answers or give the happy ending. There are dozens an dozens of shows that have similar themes where the person is lonely and works through it and voila, happy ending and friends. The thing is life isn't like that. Its got ups and downs and where are most shows show that you can overcome loneliness and depression Eva stands there as a testament to the act that you can slip back into those old habits quite easily. There is no happy ending, just a journey with peaks and troughs. This speaks to people and its why its had such staying power over the years.

The anime does a lot to show that their relationship really wasn't romantic. There's that scene where Shinji thinks Rei looks a lot like a mother when she was wringing a cloth was meant to emphasise that relationship, considering she's like a clone of his own mother.

TV ending sounds more like instrumentality helped Shiinji stop being depressed, and the congratulations was everyone giving him the unconditional validation he always wanted.
