Consider the mid 2000s was the height of harem-esque VN adaptations so Haruhi came around poking fun at some of their tropes

Also, maniac pixie girl liking and referencing male otaku stuff was pretty damn potent among fans

It was popular in its time, and remained influential for years afterwards. That influence has more or less dwindled away, but it remains a classic due to the way it impacted the era. I personally like it on its own merits too.

I've only got into anime about a year ago and of the 20 or so series I've watched in their entirety, Haruhi is the only one I've dropped. Made it to episode 13, but it got boring.
