You know, after seeing how the TV Tokyo producer Hosoya spergs out on twitter desperately defending KF2 and Kimura. How he hates the first season and its fans. How he says that KF2 is THEIR show as if KF1 was someone else's. I'm starting to think that it was his idea to oust Tatsuki and install his buddy Kimura instead.
We know for a fact that Hosoya and Kimura are old friends and it was Hosoya who asked Kimura to direct KF2. Probably he wanted to hand over to his beloved Kimura a sequel to a popular show but the plan kinda backfired. A typical case of nepotism.

There's also Daijo Kudo, Kadokawa's anime division producer who was rumored to have protested behind the scenes due to Kemono Friends s1 being pushed by Kadokawa's publishing division even though it was obviously an anime.

His credits in the producer listing for season 2 were much higher than in season 1 - only behind the Tv Tokyo and AT-X producers now. Also, the chief of the publishing division didn't appear in the marketing or events this time while he was involved in interviews about the franchise in general during season 1 (even though looking back he wasn't credited for anything in the anime itself), and there's also the release being done as a standard Blu-Ray in pricing and features, while previously they boasted about their unique release method (cheaper than usual anime, pushing the guidebooks front and center to the point that it was considered a publication with a bundled anime rather than the other way around).

Manga characters have been incorporated in the setting as the "1st generation" according to the guidebooks, but, yes, the manga itself doesn't really fit even with that, since Ceruleans are supposed to have appeared from the start and the Japari Park was never fully open post-Friends like it was in the manga.

I don't trust that tweet as I don't even know the person who posted it (I mean, he has a ton of followers, so what he says must be true, right? Right?) but it seems very plausible to me.

Yaoyorozu operates like a doujin circle so they would want to use IPs they don't own very liberally (side projects, sponsored material...). It's possible that Yaoyorozu people tried to push more towards such freedom and it was affecting the KF project. They would want more freedom to use KF material for their own side projects for example. Maybe they also wanted a better revenue sharing model too (moar moneys). Maybe they got too cocky after the success of KF1 and used it to try and advance their agenda even further.

Regardless of how "noble" their cause might have been, I believe it greatly contributed to creating this whole drama.
Corporate suits or not, everyone has their limits and when you push too hard you get FUCKED eventually.

The official explanation which the production committee guys always hide behind made it clear, they tried to reward Yaoyorozu's good work by taking away power from them and pushing new terms on them. It is common sense for Fukuhara to tell the KF committee to fuck off. Cause Yaoyorozu and Tatsuki are the one with leverage and that KF needs, not the other way round. The idea that you can make a good KF s2 without Tatsuki is nothing short of laughable and ridiculous. Not because Tatsuki is the only good director in the industry, but how many people in the industry could have made something like KF s1 and Kemurikusa?

If he was that much against the principle of a production comittee, to the point of destroying what was by far their most succesful project and partnership to date, he woudn’t have accepted to work for a production comittee to begin with. But after what happened and YYZ got royally fucked over, how could he not resent KFP and think the production comittee model sucks?

If committee made unreasonable demands then YYZR should have left and made a case for their anti committee struggle. It would have been the perfect occasion.

I just watched this (the first season) and I feel retarded for ignoring it for so long, this was actually amazing. I did not expect to enjoy this so much at all. The characters are endearing and the show draws you right in. Kaban and Serval only get better and better as the show goes on.

Quickest rundown is that the production committee decided at some point to NOT allow the studio which did the first season to do the second season.
There was some disagreement between the studio and the committee but no one really knows what exactly happened.
This created drama and the vocal part of the Internet decided to side with the studio and the director of S1 (Tatsuki).

Strange thing is that Tatsuki and his studio were prominently against the committee system because they considered it unfair for studios to not benefit more from successful series and not have enough control over the intellectual property of the material they work on.
Yet people accuse the production committee, Kadowaka and Mine (the IP owner) of being greedy even though technically the chances of Tatsuki wanting a bigger share from KF1 are MUCH higher.

I'll read about this in further detail before formulating an informed opinion, but for now I can only say that Kadokawa are often viewed as scum and notorious for mishandling their franchises with abusive jewing and thus it's not surprising people would side with whoever is on the other side of the argument.

The production committee system is for burden sharing in the beginning, where managers pool their time, come up with contracts, try to find people willing to do the project, find corporations who will fund the project and so on.

I respectfully disagree with that opinion. The sponsors may have funded something I liked into existence, but they probably had little part in the actual creation of the thing.

He and YYZ did create the KF anime. They didn't create the IP, but they made the show. They wrote the scripts, modeled the characters, and animated the whole thing. I don't know if he wanted the rights to KF, if he did, I don't think that was right. If YYZ wanted a bigger cut, I find that perfectly fair.

I still have one episode to watch in S2, but I would say it's worth watching if you are a fan of the series. I think the season as a whole is close to rotting garbage, but there is still the occasional endearing character that pops up, and having a better understanding of the backgrounds of those characters makes fanworks that include them more enjoyable for me.
It's sort of akin to seeking out warmth from a dumpster fire, but as long as the fire is there, you might as well get some use out of it.

Kyoto Animation was a small studio who worked for KEY and Kadokawa, they did exceptional works and saved enough money to start being part of production committees, abandoned Kadokawa in good terms and now they make their own anime with total control of the IPs.
My take is that YYZ were too full of themselves and fucked up their relationship with a partner that could've eventually lead them to that kind of independence.

Truth is, a portion of posters here do not like when characters show emotions (hence all the complains about S2).
In S2 you could tell when a character was angry, happy, sad, kind, or acting cocky, tsundere, ashamed, brave...
In S1 everything was much simpler and everyone mostly stuck to their role of having a gimmick and being cute.

Oh so they saved the entire park from fucking disaster, while in season 1, they could have waited for the sun to kill the giant cerulean by leading it into the fucking ocean. Like it was always going to do.

Ep2 was dumb. A whole lot of nothing. The pandas weren't even cute. Even though they are pandas.

It's amazing though, how those fan-made Kemono Instinct episodes captured some of what was great about KF1, they were genuinely good. If they had been released as the actual KF2 people would have loved it. How badly Kadokawa fucked up the KF2 we actually got, with all their resources behind it, compared to what fans produced - with care and attention and presumably next to fuck-all money - is astounding.

Ep2 was worst episode of the first half by far, it actually starts to get better after that. Then it gets worse, much worse.

Saving the park from disaster wasn't the big problem (relatively weak as though its visual depiction may have been).

It was the absent character reactions to Tiger getting crushed, to Bat-Eared Fox mourning the loss of her hotel, and the ongoing Kaban depression quest.

That was somewhat explained. They were worried that the cerulean might change shape or catch a friend that isn't as strong or quick as the hunter team.

Dolphin and Sea Lion being slaves to their memories of being captive show animals just seemed so off to me, sadly it was a sign of things to come.

Yeah, kinda, the Indian Elephant fight was pretty harsh in the context of KF, but it made me care more about what happened to the characters because I didn't want to see anyone get hurt, KF2 didn't seem to give much of a shit. But I think even if we had a continuation of Serval and Kaban's adventures on the mainland things would have got a bit darker too, probably more like Kemurikusa. I don't think the post-apocalyptic feel would have lessened any.

I'm back and forth. I think I just really liked s2's hairstyle, and face. And as much as I like exposed shoulders, seems like it makes more sense to have her more covered.

Agreed about animal mannerisms too. The more notable s2 friends are mostly focused on their rivalrys with other friends. I think Pig actually ended up being the best example of a character with a distinct personality and gimmick that was also in line with her real animal counterpart.

I can understand why it could be a bit disturbing, but I actually found their reward obsession entertaining. I think it could have been really good if they had done a better job of handling the theme regarding human effects on animals.

And that she got crushed by rubble falling out of an empty sky.
