I understand how you feel. I have the original Hellsing release DVDs and even when they initially released I found myself laughing at how dumb and edgy it got.
I think that is the same reason I totally love a movie like Fast Five. It also probably means I am at least partially retarded.

When assholes are torn out of assholes. The gore flies allover the place like ketchup. Guts are ripped through dick holes. Vaginas spew little crack babies that don't believe in themselves.
It reaches the point where you remember that this shit is just cartooning and that no amount of edge can make it any more "serious."
Hellsing is fun stuff, but real edginess has to be carefully balanced.

Depending on what "serious" moments you're talking about, you were doing the right thing. Hellsing is intentionally over-the-top which is why its edge works so well. Though that won't stop brainlets from thinking that gore and death automatically means something wants to "shock people" or "be taken seriously".

Because Bols' wife was a QT so it automatically had more of an impact. Plus it was just plain retarded and exacerbated the manga's problem with its unnecessary large and frequent body count when it would've been a perfectly fine edgy manga otherwise.

I could never take Hellsing seriously but I always got the vibe that it was trying to take itself seriously (and failing) which gave it sort of an awkward and uncomfortable vibe to me. Maybe I'm just a brainlet and the author is on 23 levels of irony but as far as I could tell it was just wall to wall cringeworthy edginess. Perhaps I'm missing something?

Hellsing is a series where a batshit insane vampire and his busty police girl apprentice fight psychotic bayonet-wielding priests and cyborg werewolf vampire nazi's. It's pretty fucking clear it's not trying to be "serious" or "deep".

Scanlations stopped because it got licensed in english. Manga is up to volume 14, volume 10 comes out in english late this month. Fortunately the publisher releases digital versions too, so reading it shouldn't be that difficult.
