saiyan saga - goku's death and training in the afterlife is essentially old dragonball dying and all the changes he starts doing (both artwise and thematically)
freeza - he's still adapting to the new themes and changed artstyle. by the time goku comes back, he's basically setting on what would be dragonball's more iconic look
cell saga - he was sick of drawing dbz. makes goku sick with the heart disease. keeps fighting with his editor over the villains and whatnot. eventually makes gohan the main character and have goku stay dead (done with dragonball)
buu saga - goku comes back (toriyama comes back for one more saga). isn't happy about coming back. wants the new generation to take over, but it fails to do so appropriately. eventually defeats the enemy but leaves again, never intending to come back
