The premise was sound. The storyboard doomed it. The scary part is it's hard to blame writers when the Recap episode was written so good. It's almost like the Storyboard was written by committee and the writers had to figure out how to follow it.
You literally could give this property to any other writer and say "write a storyboard based on this premise" and it would be better than what came out of this.
Yea Forums right now could write a better storyboard for this show in one of the "Make an anime plot" threads without changing anything else.

It's kinda sad when I can say the Darkwing Duck episode where he jumped to the real world did a better job.

Souta shouldn't have even existed. The main character should have been Alice's (the red head, I forgot if that was her name or not) creator, and Altair should have been a creation from his childhood.
It would have made for a cool "Who does dad love more, you or me" kind of thing between the two, instead of the absolutely fucking nothing that Alice turned out to be.

The worst part is that Souta could have easily been replaced by investigative work. Selesia could be the actual MC and try talking with family and classmates of Setsuna to discover what happened, and Meteora makes the backup plan to summon Setsuna using the collective work of everyone that liked her but she couldn't figure it out because of her clinical depression. It would also have the nice aspect that both fictional Setsuna and Altair were collaborative works.

Totally agree that removing Souta would have make this show a hell of a lot more watchable.
Just removing Souta cucking himself and cutting back on Meteora talking would have freed up a couple episodes to do more character building.
The Aliceteria and Blitz backstories made their paths a hell of a lot more interesting when they panned out. I still know jack about Magane, Rui and Hikayu other than "Shark girl", "Not Shinji": and "Eroge girl"
