They really fumbled the whole thing. I think they should have fully developed the side romances as a way to build up the "story arc" of the main romance. Also making the MC basically a stone statue in terms of emotional expression was a pretty stupid idea overall.

The problem is this was directed by a woman so when Tada-kun break in tears for his waifu it's supposed to be supercute, see but most people that stick to the end were into the show for the waifu herself. I guess girls were too busy schlicking to Banana Fish that season and a normalfag hooking up with a princess sounded too much like otaku wish-fulfillment and alienated many potential female viewers.

Women find very romantic when the other guy voluntarilly hands over the female lead. It's their equivalent to the harem end. At least it was implied Charles is going to move on, a waifu isn't allowed to move on ever or the moefags yell NTR and send death threats

It probably would've done better without the side romances at all. A full episode was wasted on cat romance and another wasted on creating a completely pointless unrequited love plot.
I'm sure I'd have forgiven any issues if it was actually funny. It shows how important the source material was in Nozaki-kun being good and getting all the same staff together was a bit pointless without a decent source.
