Frankly it's a perfectly fine reason. There's a real danger of being attacked for being associated with a shitty community alone, even if you are technically the one decent person that likes !thing. On the other hand, if a fan following is shit and you *know* about it being shit, but you still try to enjoy !thing, then you're bound to constantly remind yourself of that shitty community.
