I still love it. So comfy. Wish they'd recapture it. It's the reason I've stuck with the show.
If by comfy you mean a mostly boring mess that can easily put you to sleep with a few bright spots sprinkled in, then sure
Good God, the Aincrad Arc was a giant dissapointment. At least the OP and ED were really damn good.
let's forget about Fairy Dance please. I don't even want to think about that wet sock of an arc.
It’s the single worst part of the entire franchise.
Honestly the anime is good until they start to play family with the AI baby while the rest of the people is dieing.
Even spicy spoon in the eye is.
>be dubfag
>not done with season 3 yet because waiting for new dubs to release every Saturday
I'm worried about Kirito. Hold me bros
>dubfag
>hold him
I wouldn't touch you with a five meter long stick.
To answer your question, OP, I agree. Yes i love harem shit and yes I love romance. The bond between Asuna and Kirito is so fucking pure. And the stakes were so real during the first half of season 1.
Idk why people hate on it so much. I'm curious to hear what they consider "good" romamce stories because I want to watch them too
Fpbp
The first half of GGO
While I am also a sucker for these two, allow me to ask you a question that may give you an idea
Why do Kirito and Asuna love each other? I know that the reason Asuna loves Kirito is obvious and she outright monolouges about it (ep. 13), but think about why exactly Kirito loves Asuna.
2 years
>"good" romamce stories
Slave Labyrinth Harem. Still a better love story than SAO.
Isnt the first part of SAO is basically "CRAWLING IN MY SKIN"
Are you fucking kidding me?? Comfy?? That was the most stressful thing i've ever watched. Sao is extremely stressful and I literally prayed every episode that no one I loved died.
Did your mom end up dying?
Progressive
>bond between Asuna and Kirito
what bond? went on a detective case and then proceed to marry? yeah. so pure and so much romance. Kirito had better chemistry with the blacksmith girl than Asuna
You need to be 18 to post here.

>think about why exactly Kirito loves Asuna.
You make a good point. But consider this: combat veterans who only spend two weeks together in extreme violence and stress often times end up becoming lifelong friends over this one, short experience. I think of Aincrad as a similar experience.
It may seem superficial and cliché for Kirito to love her because she is the coveted fair maiden who must be protected at all costs, but it works and it satisfies a subconscious desire of most men. I think that's pretty pure. Of course, their relationship develops and matures for other reasons along the way
>pure
>PTSD-induced co-dependence
>relationship develop
>sick addiction
Aren't all real relationships just PTSD-induced co-dependences? No? Have I been doing IRL wrong this whole time? maybe that's why I like this shitty show
Let them out, they'll get sick and die in that dark dank rape dungeon.
well, we can't all have perfect relationships
I've never watched SAO but I've heard a lot about it, so correct me if any of these things is wrong:
-Kirito is super powerful right off the bat, is unbeatable and has a special skill that nobody else has simply because of RNG
-Asuna is loved by literally everyone so much so that the main plot is about the villain wanting to bang her
-every character other than Kirito and Asuna is there to marvel at how powerful/beautiful Kirino or Asuna is
>Only 1 person allowed to use Dual Wield skills in an MMO
What the fuck did Kayaba mean by this
There are other unique skills as well you know
Yes.
Yeah desu it was really comfy at the beggining you could feel the potential, it had everything to be a masterpiece, the premise was really good, shit i think it could have been a solid 8/10 if it had end when kirito is leaving the hospital or something
>has a special skill that nobody else has simply because of RNG
Kind of. That's the initial explanation of it, but it is later revealed that Kirito's willpower (or spirit) had an effect on the AI that ran the game engine, so it also had to do with who he was IRL
>Asuna is loved by literally everyone
False
>so much so that the main plot is about the villain wanting to bang her
He's not the "main villain" imo, and they had a relationship outside of the game, too
>every character other than Kirito and Asuna is there to marvel at how powerful/beautiful Kirino or Asuna is
They are pretty god-tier during season 1, but later they are really fucked up from their time trapped in VR, so even their weak ass friends feel pity for them and try to help them do normal things
Translation?
huh
>combat veterans who only spend two weeks together in extreme violence and stress often times end up becoming lifelong friends over this one, short experience
actually, now that you say that, the pieces are starting to come together. They're both teenagers playing a full-dive VRMMO, so there's a certain level of "desperate for any human contact" that they likely both have from the start. Not only this, but according to people who have read the LNs, Kirito and Asuna both actually have some pretty serious familial issues, so add that onto the pile of "reasons for these two to have mental and emotional instability". Factor in the fact that they're both two of the best players in the entire game, which means that even if they ever hated each other, they're still going to have some degree of respect for one another due to their obvious skill and expertise. THEN add the part about them being together in stressful and violent combat for an extended period of time, and you get all the ingredients for a not-so-healthy a-hell-of-a-lot-stronger-than-friendship bond between them. Considering that they're both hormonal teenagers with family issues who probably don't really know what love is and are starving for love at the same time, means that they'll probably think that they love each other. This in turn may or may not actually turn into proper romantic love, if they become well-adjusted together.
Well thanks user, you just helped me piece together something that I thought was one of the biggest mysteries about this shitstorm of a show.
>anything more comfy
A cinder block pillow
Willpower thing sounds like a weak way to justify the whole special skill thing.
What was the relationship between the villain and Asuna?
>combat veterans who only spend two weeks together in extreme violence and stress often times end up becoming lifelong friends over this one
by that logic Asuna would have whored herself to literally every male while Kirito played lone wolf
While everyone goes out to Die in the game he didn't give a fuck and just opened a shop
Asuna would've probably gone with anyone who helped her early in the game, it just happened to be Kirito. That's how human relationships work, it's all chance
Maybe she did.
>What was the relationship between the villain and Asuna?
every villain after the first is a rapist in sao. that's just how it is
remember that there was a certain event that sparked her interest in Kirito, that being the time where she found him snoozing under a tree in the plaza and she got mad at him for it. Before that point, she was busy being emo about getting stuck in a death trap VRMMO fantasy world
again, she outright monolouged about this.
> Why does Kirito love Asuna?
He's a lonely, insecure shut-in who's never really had friends. He meets somebody who actually loves him for who he is. She's also the one that pulled him out of his depression after all his friends fucking died.
Thats my 2 cent at least.
A criminally underrated character imo.

He's doing fine.
Calibur was top comfy.
Same amount of sex (maybe slightly more)

>Willpower thing sounds like a weak way to justify the whole special skill thing.
It's the entire underlying theme for every single one of Kawahara's series and one of the biggest things that connects SAO with Accel World.
I'll never forgive A-1 and Itou for not adapting Kirito and Asuna's duel.
Was it rape?

>Is there anything more comfy than the first half of the season 1 of Sword Art Online?
Kirito's chest
Funny that he also has the same Seiyuu
SAO isn't isekai.
Have you tried to put salt on your wound? It realy recaptures the enjoyment of watching SAO.
something witty entertainments sword art online abridged.
Its just overall a better anime, a really good one even.
Reading SAO Progressive, the only worthwhile ver. of SAO.
>Kind of. That's the initial explanation of it, but it is later revealed that Kirito's willpower (or spirit) had an effect on the AI that ran the game engine, so it also had to do with who he was IRL
What special skill? Are you talking about dual wielding? I thought that was just given to whoever had the fastest reflexes in the game
It's more than just willpower. It's also about embracing the virtual world as your home. This is why Kirito, who felt the most at ease at Aincrad and marveled at that world the most was stronger than anyone else. It's also why he couldn't beat Yuuki, for whom the virtual world was her only reality.
>BUT IT REFUSED
Jesus Christ this is the shittiest trope there is, literally gutter-tier writing.
Strea's chest
Awful take
Great take
Hot
For me in SAO alone it would be the sweet cabin life of Kirito and Alice. It's painful and the end got my gut but it makes the contrast to Alice taking care of Kirito even more homely and pleasant.
It's both one of the most comfy and the most surprising parts of the series for me. Then there's other series as well of course.
The first half of Alicization.
The second half of season 2 of Sword art Online.
I feel you OP. SAO season one is the most prominent example of wasted potential in the whole medium
This, pretty much this. The first cour of Alicization (from Rulid to Sword Academy) had been so comfy.
And then everything plummets into despair right after.
Why does Reki keep writing comfy feel followed by painful angst? I can't take this shit. I enjoyed the wholesome first volume of UR and I'm dreading the day it inevitably takes a darker turn.
The entire premise and setting is very appealing.
The addiction of stat based rpgs married to the skill of action games, a fantastical setting within a low sci fi setting of 100 floors of sandbox filled with dungeons, monsters and quests with completely different environments in a MMO "game" that allowed you to experience anything from cooking and sex to owning property and being an entrepreneur instead of a monster hunter is amazing, the threat of death also made for constant high stakes, something a lot of these types of stories lack because they don't go full death game, at least Log Horizon knows not to focus on combat and action but a lot of it is just about some douche nozzles playing an MMO for fun.
It just enthralls people, sure SAO was never a masterpiece, in fact it constantly went from decent to so bad it's good constantly, but the foundation itself was solid and kept people wanting to like it.
You can have fantasy action, drama, romance, tragedy, comedy, comfy slice of life all with characters that aren't fantasy people but average modern day people trapped in a fantastical situation.
The problem is that despite it being enough to make an entire epic out of with endless spin off material, SAO is over and done with by volume 1, just a fucking footnote, and now we get force-fed modern day slice of life bullshit while they play games on the side, it's boring, bland, unnecessary.
Fuck fairies, fuck GGO, fuck whatever crap Alicewhatever is.
SAO should have never stopped being about being trapped in Sword Art Online, for fucksake, it's the fucking title of the series.
Ever read the SAO Progressive series? Pretty much exactly what you want.
if it's "stuck in MMO" shit, I still regularly watch Log Horizon because of the explanation and worldbuilding in S1
soo good
The first half of Sword Art Online Alicization?
Neither Eugeo nor Kirito deserved their suffering.
Log Horizon isn't "stuck in MMO", it's "MMO became reality".
Other LN's (PROGRESSIVE), detail what everyone wanted of SAO, floor by floor clearing.
Kirito meets Asuna before the 1st boss fight, basically rescuing herself from suicide because she thought her life had no meaning (hence the emotional issues you mentioned) and wanted to go out at least putting on a fight and not from a jump in the starting city.
All of this and the first boss fight hapoen in Vol 1 of Peogressive, after the Beater thing Asuna stays with Kirito, so they are like a "duo" and the best in the early game.
I think they are in floor 6 right now, and as the Knights of the Blood Oath are born on the 25th floor and Asuna goes with them. Something huge happens between Asuna and Kirito, considering they part ways.
also alternative and alicization
Yep i's like with Overlord too. Completely separate from the VRMMO or even "trapped in a game" genre
>Yep i's like with Overlord too.
Nope. Log Horizon world matches that of a game almost perfectly, down to geography and factions.
Not only geography doesn't match in Overlord - neither any of the factions do. Not to mention presence of original magic and shit like runes and martial arts that did not exist in the game.
They're both isekai and no, Log Horizon doesn't match exactly with its geography give how Elder Tale merged with a version of Earth somehow. The real games become real stories are stuff like Last Boss.
based
Why do you care? Stop thinking fiction is real.
>merged with a version of Earth somehow
Animeonly for Log Horizon so I may be wrong about it.
Overlord is most definitely an isekai as world is completely new and unknown to Yggdrasil players.
I'm fucking bawling my eyes out right now, I knew the episode would come but fuck Episode 24 hurt like a bitch.
Eugeo's death scene was so well done. Fuck that song.
Fuck bros. I wasn't planning on crying but that fucking insert song hurt. And then "I can't see you" killed me.
She was too busy being emo and stubborn about wanting to get out asap. She also found Kirito before everyone else and he seemed interesting to her right off the bat.
I rewatched episode 24 and they did good a pretty good job overall but everything right after Quinella dies until the gunshots was handled brilliantly. So props to A1 and Ono for that. I sobbed for hours.
I liked the relationship but Ordinal Scale imo really knocked it out of the park.
Dude he was just a a program. You don't cry when you turn off your computer either right?
It was such a well directed scene. The whole "You are my best friend, My hero" and "Stay cool, Kirito" FUCK
My computer turns back on, user.
I can install and reinstall a program in my computer user, I can't do that with Eugeo.
Are you so unable to think without memes as crutches that you didn't realize the message was if anything

I get it.
thanks for clarifying you can't read.
Man Ash and Klein are underutilised characters.
youtube.com
Is there any possible way to bring back Eugeo in UR? I don't mind spoilers.
Klein is for sure. At least in S1, OS and Alicization he isn't the butt of a joke.
I haven't read AW but I like SAO, do you recommend it?
Not impossible but it's highly improbable the Eugeo we knew will come back.
>do you recommend it?
Damn fucking right I do. It's all consistently pretty good.
>people who came to Yea Forums when SAO first aired have been here for over seven years
Jesus.
Does Kirito remember those two at least after he escapes UW in anyway? Does he have a moment to think about it or reflect on it?
This.
Yes. He remembers in the end of volume 18 and from what we know he still remembers Eugeo's death and Quinella it still stings. He has mostly gotten over it though by now. Also OS and its side stories are canon in the LN verse now.
> Those two
Who? Eugeo and ?
The second half.
And that's saying a lot.
Oh, if you don't mind I had a question about those. Should I be reading those after the entire Arc is over or can I jump into them now? I see things like Material Edition.
Basically, want to get into the LN's after this but not sure if I can just straight jump in with this adaptation.
OG Alice.
I wouldn't say "gotten over it" completely. But atleast he isn't breaking down just thinking about Eugeo anymore.
>Also OS and its side stories are canon in the LN verse now.
So Asuna and Kirito are pretty much engaged now?
You should be fine jumping in whenever. Alicization starts in the 9th volume and EP 24 of the anime just finished V14, so if you wanna read ahead you can just start with V15.
It's up to you really. If you want to enjoy the next arc to the fullest it's probably best to just watch the anime and then read the LN. As for where you want to start, up to you as well. If you want to continue where the anime left off, start at vol 15. It depends on how much you like the series. I recommend starting at least from volume 9.
If you are asking for the OS side stories, read them whenever, it doesn't change much. OS takes place before Alicization either way.
Well they would have been before Alicization. Either way they are still very much together.
Thanks.
Well. Technically not. They're still both minors, it's more symbolic if anything.
Based devil.
Is there a TL link of the OS side stories and what not?

So are Eiji and Kirito bros now? Or something like Frenemies?
Not quite bros. But they're friends. Kirito quickly forgave him when he realized he might very well have done the exact same had he been in Eiji's shoes.
The more latter more than the former.
I thought the first arc was mediocre at best and dropped after the second one but people keep saying GGO and the new Alcization are genuinely good, are they lying to me or telling the truth?
Aincrad is good, but I never ever understood why it was said to be the "only good arc" I feel like people who didn't watch it at all just said that blanket statement. Phantom Bullet, MR, and Alicization easily surpass it for me.
Alicization and MR are genuinely good. The rest is a bit more subjective.
Is Progressive actually worth reading?
If so, I might pick it up. Despite how salty I am at S1 and Ordinal Scale for being giant gut-punch disappointments, I still want to experience good SAO because goddammit the premise and setting have some amazing potential.
lizbeth best girl!
i hate how she Always get ignored
at least we got sugu/leafa
The OST they used for the trailer is sound real fucking fresh. If they fix the combat a bit more then this is gonna be gold.
youtube.com
It gets way more into the systems regarding the game if that's your thing.
Depends, are you invested in Kirito and Asuna? If not you ought not to read it. But if you don't mind them you'll probably like it.
Are the SAO games actually good? I've heard so much mixed reception about them.
They're C-tier anime games but the story is fun.
I can't watch or read SAO without being reminded of chapter 16.5

GGO was alright. Fuka was way more interesting than LLENN though.
OK, saw what I needed to see, I'm out
LLENN is such a massive downgrade from Karen.
Whom you replied to here.
It is everything SAO should have been from the beginning. I fully recommend it. One of the complaints I do have is that Progressive makes the Aincrad Arc awkward as it seems Kirito and Asuna barely know each other. My head canon is that they split up badly in floor 25, hence their attitude.
>they split up badly in floor 25, hence their attitude
This gets referenced in one of the side stories (Cordial Chords or Hopeful Chant I think?)
Makes sense, they mentioned in passing that the events of the end of the Elf War Quest line had left their relationship strained or at least was one of the factors that lead them to split into their own paths.
It's sad though given Kirito suffers the most after the split given the passing of the Moonlit Black Cats.
Looking forward to Kirito suffering show again. Yay.
I'm just hoping that the perspective changes to Klein or Argo or maybe multiple characters during that time while Kirito goes AWOL on them and only participates in floor boss raids.
>Klein or Argo
That's gonna fucking kill me to see Argo's reaction the whole event while Asuna is nonethewiser.
Progressive has so much potential, I just hope it lives up to it.

Thats the best part of SAO user.
Sad as I am to admit it, it is.
I can relate, I can't feel any happiness or relief without needing to use Venlafaxine every so often. It's to the point that if I don't have it at least once every week, I'd just feel angry or not feel anything (this terrifies me more because I'm afraid that someday I'll just be numb to the world), I'd rather feel pain and anguish than not to feel anything.

Not sure if it'll be that bad to be honest. You'll be able to feel emotions just not describe them or understand them
Goddammit
I don't think it would actually make that much sense if Graphite Edge is Star King. His Incarnate Powers would be literally centuries ahead of any other Originator, it could just be that he is hiding his true power level but it wouldn't make much sense that he had to be rescued by the Green Legion. I think it's safer to bet that GE is a student or a relative of Kirito/Star King and managed to trace his memories
Star King Kirito is fucking based. He finally gets the God Powers he was destined to have.
>a relative of Kirito/Star King and managed to trace his memories
I've been saying all this time that GE is actually Kirito's son instead
>super powerful right off the bat
he's a loner who grinds all the time. when other people were eating lunch with friends, he was grinding. when other people were... you get the idea. thus, he developed his natural fighting talent fighting low level things, or his level fighting higher leveled things. he gitted gud.
For the skill thing, that only came later, and was in universe canon given to a single person with the highest reaction time, was probably just so kayaba could have a "hero" to lose to. Kirito never really used that though in normal battles.
>Asuna is loved by literally everyone so much so that the main plot is about the villain wanting to bang her
Second part, sure, not the first part. First part she was just a normal girl, who was the VP of a top guild so was "famous" that way.
>every character other than Kirito and Asuna is there to marvel at how powerful/beautiful Kirino or Asuna is
That's because they suck, usually. Not a lot of people went combat route. A lot were too afraid of dying, or went support. And, you know. A LOT OF PEOPLE DIED.
You know, you might really like sword art online abridged. Same plot more or less, but it really handles the relationship a bit better.

So Kirito is a tryhard loner who somehow manages to grind solo without dying somehow when other people are dying. And somehow this tryhard loner would later have a collection of super pretty bitches who are hungry for his cock.
Sounds like a bad oc by an edgy teenager.
>-every character other than Kirito and Asuna is there to marvel at how powerful/beautiful Kirino or Asuna is
The canonically most beautiful character in the whole series is actually a main villain, and Kirito kills her by impaling her with his sword.

He wasn't thinking straight. His buddy just died then his brain got nuked. As for his ability to break the rules of the game it is implied based Akihiko made it so that if you FEEL strong enough you can break the boundries of the game. And since literally everything uses hai engine everything copies that little "feature"
What is it like having to animate your waifu's death?
Better question is how does it feel to animate a pure soul getting killed for no good reason while his hero get brain fucked no more than 2 minutes later
Ouch
People still don't fucking realize that Incarnation comes both in positive and negative ways, if you don't have enough willpower or don't believe in yourself enough to do something then you will fail to do that action.
I remember binging the first season of SAO and really liking it at the time. I rewatched the show years later and it was not very good, and not only that, but it felt like I was remembering better parts of the show that didn't actually exist. I realized I liked the idea of the show, but the reality wasn't very good and my mind had filled in extra scenes to improve my memory of the experience. This is something I have had happen with other stories, but none were so memory edited as SAO was.
