does Penguindrum hold up today? I remember the finale made me cry when it aired. But then again, I was also like 13 years old when I watched it.

That's because it's not an Utena thread.

Anyways just wait til Sarazanmai airs, we'll get our threads then.

Utena threads are dying off as fast.
It's about Yea Forums becoming more plebeian, I suppose.

Too bad girls like her don't exist in my part of 3d universe.

I didn't get it

save it for sarazanmai

Then try it again

Yes, the ending is pretty bad though

Almost certain Sarazanmai is going to be a remake of Penguindrum.

That but a gayer one

I watched this show twice.

What the fuck was Momoka’s problem?

Do you get that Ikuhara will waste your time, and laugh about it to his cats?

It was an apple.

Watch it for the third time then.
No, it was pink washing machine

Attached: time to drink.gif (180x180, 2.66M)

Nah man, it makes some sense. Its been a long time since I've watched it, so I'll try to explain the chart but I'm forgetting some things.

The Penguindrum is the fruit of fate that has the power to keep people alive. It can be split into four pieces and those pieces given to people that are important to the chosen one. When this happens it isn't always shown as the character literally giving the other character a piece of an apple. But effectively what the character is doing is sharing part of their fruit of fate. In the last episode, which is a flashback to the very beginning, you see Kanba receive the Penguindrum (fruit of fate) when he is chosen. He splits it with Shouma to keep him alive. Later on Shouma splits it with Himari to keep her alive at the child broiler. Himari lives, but is later cursed to die as repentance for her parents actions as terrorists, so the apple she receives from Shouma rots (not literally, the Penguindrum is still fine when she gives it back, but she will still die if she has it, it just prolongs her life). The rest of the series is them initiating a "Survival Strategy" to keep Himari alive, which involves a bunch of stuff I don't remember.

Wish the penguins had been used for more than background gags after the first few episodes.

I just purchased the art book and forgot how lewd the show could be.

Started off great, slide into medicore. Lots of flare and flash but didn't feel as well thought out. Needing extra material like game bios, manga, cds, etc to flesh it means the meat wasn't great. Looked really good, and I'm excited for what he does next, and enjoyed it but it didn't quite make it.

>people didn't like Penguindrums ending
How? It was a emotional roller-coaster into a cute ending wrap that circled back to episode 1. I think it's his best work.

All this lewdness is not sexual at all. I mean, it's hard to get hard in the middle of those plot twists

Crystal Princess is sexy enough for any time

*ahem*
shouma×kanba 4ever

Maybe. Still I've never felt aroused while watching MPD. Unlike Utena, where many girls have something sexual about them.

No homo but I agree. Ringo can be the middle of the sandwich

I like Yuri Kuma Arashi more because its less messy and the story and message are more focused.

Attached: yuri kuma lick.gif (500x281, 1.97M)

Starlight comes across as kinda like Gridman, they just want to 'imitate' the aesthetics/style like how Trigger just want to cram a bunch of references and doesn't really have much in attempting to add anything new or trying to give its own identity. Basically it comes across as all bark and no bite.
Even Yurikuma, which was not as favored as Utena or Penguindrum, had something about it that gives it a 'punch' and is a very different beast from the manga.

Isn't Ikuhara directing something this season?

Yeah Sarazanmai.

Guys, I'm 16 episodes into Utena and to be quite frank I'm bored to fucking tears. Sure it's beautiful and accompanied by great soundtrack but story so far has been nothing but teenage drama sprinkled with some magical shenanigans here and there. Does it get any better later, because I'm debating just reading through the plot synopsis on the wiki and save myself twelve hours of torment. I've only ever bothered starting it in the first place because Ikuhara's later works grabbed me by the nuts from episode 1 and didn't let go until the end, it doesn't seem to be the case with this one.

Bland, empty aping of Ikuni's style.

>parents are terrible people
>obviously their kid must be punished too
I don't get it. Is it an eastern thing?

Attached: 1545898795281.jpg (639x392, 33K)

Yes.

Ever heard of the Bible?

>their kid must be punished too
Nowhere does it say that. Main character's lives are being figuratively and literally poisoned by people who've suffered from their parent's actions and who can find no outlet for the grief and anger they feel for the terrorists other than their kids.
If anything the moral of the story quite the opposite, you shouldn't hold kids responsible for the sins of their parents since the protagonists are painted in a sympathetic light and the terror victims often end up playing the villainous roles, perpetuating the cycle of violence. But people's behavior isn't always dictated by logic and reason so they lash out at whatever is close enough to the cause of their grief.
The story is quite christian when you think about it, it's all about learning forgives and seeking redemption. Is that really an eastern thing?

Attached: Autism Speaks.jpg (960x960, 36K)

Why was everyone such a raging dick? Discounting Ringo, of course, who miraculously became the most sensible, innocent character in the span of 10 episodes.

Ringo tried to drug and rape someone.

Pshhh, who doesn't? Water under the bridge, I say.

It was unmei!

As someone who didn't care all that much for Utena, you're in the middle of worst arc. It gets better and the more main story stuff from ep ~32 is quite fun (if as fuck).

He's a pleb.
Well, Utena is also kind of a Christian show.
And, if I'm not mistaken, Utena herself was christian, at least in the manga.

It's definitely better than Penguindrum and Yurikuma.

Worst Ikuhara show.

I hate the word Fate/stay.

oh yeah

Attached: based ikuni.webm (960x540, 1.64M)

Because Ikuhara is a degenerate faggot and writes every character with a traumatic and/or abusive background that turns them into nihilistic sociopaths who only live to fulfill their personal ambitions at the expense of others. And their ambitions pretty much boil down to them wanting fuck their brother or their daughter or a... bear? Whatever, the author is a hack Freudist obsessed with sex and ruled by Id and all of his 2deep4u nonsense is just an attempt to hide it.

Plebs actually enjoy these glorified soap operas.

Definitely, but you should go ahead and watch Utena if you haven't yet.
>Anyways just wait til Sarazanmai airs, we'll get our threads then.
Can't wait for Yea Forums to complain about it being fujoshit all season!
Hopefully the threads will still be fun though.

Aside from Ikuhara and the same character design guy (iirc), is the premise at all similar?
Also, 11 episodes is very worrying for Ikuhara. He really works best with more time to flesh out the characters and story, worried it'll be all flashy directorial style no grounding and time to care about the characters.

To this day I have no idea what exactly Penguindrum was about but I still loved every second of it

I've already watched and rewatched Utena like 4 times. I should probably rewatch Penguindrum soon though.

This show was shit.

How is Utena Christian? If anything I think it would be somewhat critical of religion.

1. The obvious and weakest proof - the funeral ceremony. It happens at the christian cathedral. Though it might be this way because japs like the style of christian ceremonies and design of the churches.
Second - I have to take a look for it, because manga translation could contain an error

That's, of course, if we're speaking about the character herself

Good observation on the church. I think that the so-called Prince could easily be interpreted as a stand-in for God and also as a stand-in for the devil (since his names Dios and Akio refer to those specifically). Utena wants a Prince (God) to save her and make her life worth living and for a while is a fervent believer in him until she realizes the structures enforced by him are hurting the people around her and rejects him.

Yeah I was more talking about the entire show not the character. If she is intended to be Christian that would be interesting.

people who went to the prescreening said that the vibe’s more prdum than yka. meaning that characters are actually going to act like people (to some extent)

>Second
Here, found it. First Manga, chapter 11, page 4, with Utena complaining about Juri's behavior.

>During this morning's mass she suddenly named me to sing solo. And I'm bad at singing.

Huh, interesting. I guess it could be argued whether it applies to show Utena or not but it doezn't seem to be contradicted by anything in the show. Also Utena is Catholic!

Good to know. Got a link? I can only find twitter fujos who went for the seiyuus and don't seem to know Ikuhara.

twitter.com/good_haro/status/1112314717018775553?s=21

of course that could be because of the bg characters but i dont wanna be that pessimistic

Since people are discussing Utena, how would you rank the arcs. Personally:
Akio>Black Rose>Apocalypse>>Student Council

>lot of comparisons to Penguindrum in particular
Better keep this handy.

That's... Actually a pretty accurate overview of my feelings on his stuff too, and why it doesn't click with me. Thanks user.

By extension, this also applies to a lot of Japanese high literature as well. It's dominated by themes of sexual repression, which just isn't my thing.

>The duels in the latter half felt a lot weaker
Weaker in what way?
During the Akio and Black Rose arcs, the outcome of the duel is basically irrelevant as we know they all follow the same pattern, but that doesn't make them "weaker" because that's not where the focus is. They never even try to ramp up tension over whether Utena will lose or not, because what matters is what goes through the heads of the people challenging her and their internal journeys.

Except its not accurate at all.
If it doesn't click with you, you probably either don't get it, aren't thinking about it, or have low tolerance for abstract and surreal stories.

>You just don't get it, bro.
Oh fuck off.

>automated 2deep4u reply

I said it's possible they don't get it. Abstract and surreal shit isn't for everyone, I get that. But the fact that they agreed with that post that obviously didn't get it suggested they didn't understand it either

>Ikuhara
>Abstract and surreal
Not even close to the former, and barely scratching the surface of the latter. Second, how is anything the first user said about his characters wrong?

I want to fug Ringo and

> how is anything the first user said about his characters wrong?

Not him but a lot of his characters aren't like that at all. The main characters of Penguindrum aren't, Utena isn't, Anthy isn't, the only student council members that sort of fits is Saionji and Touga but that is oversimplifying their characters. All of them have people and ideals they care about and only a few could be called "nihilistic." If anything the opposite is true, many of his characters deeply believe in some "truth" which leads them to act in ways which hurt themselves and others more often then not, but they are all still capable of good.

>the popular idol girls are genuinely nice and just want their old friend to be happy
Now who saw that coming?

Attached: 3529a226233e3b36051f61fc0780e02c.jpg (800x600, 199K)

I guess that's fair in regards to the "nihilistic" part, but that still doesn't cover the real crux of the issue, which is how often Ikuhara's characters are extremely selfish in their pursuit of some vaguely sexual satisfaction (generally justified by some trauma). And how it gets to the point where all of these characters end up coming off as outright vile in how little self-awareness towards others they show. So you end up with a telenovela cast of larger-than-life, completely irredeemable people driven by ultimately very banal reasons..

To me, this always forms the core of Ikuhara's stories, with everything else (recurring motifs, commentary) just being window-dressing for it. In fact, I dislike how these directorial quirks are often used to deflect and confuse discussion. It makes it too easy to dismiss criticism with "Well, you just don't get it. Look at the apple chart again! Subarashii..."

>But that's the point, they're SUPPOSED to be flawed characters!
I have nothing against flawed characters, I just don't like the way these ones play out in particular, and how often their issues seem to boil down to some simplistic sexual frustration.
>but they are all still capable of good.
I just don't see it, frankly.

I guess I just see things differently. Sex is a big part of Ikuhara's work but I wouldn't say it's the most dominant part of Utena or Penguindrum (maybe YKA). In Utena especially the common motivation is memory not sex, which ties in with its societal critique of tradition.
The characters are usually not self aware and often do terrible things but I think a big part of Ikuhara's philosophy is that the feelings which lead us to do those vile acts are often the same ones which lead people to do good. There's an interview I don't want to dig up where Ikuhara discusses how his goal with many characters in Utena (like Shiori) he wants the audience to love BECAUSE of their flaws not in spite of it. To Ikuhara it is when characters are at their lowest and acting as their worst self that we can see their true feelings and while this doesn't mean their actions are right we can still forgive and understand them. A big part of Anthy's importance to the story of Utena is that she doesn't "deserve" to be forgiven, but Utena still does so because that's what love and forgiveness is.
As for them being irredeemable I flat out disagree. The only "irredeemable" Ikuhara character I can think of is Sanetoshi the villain in Penguindrum. Every other character in Utena, YKA, and MPD is explicitly shown to be capable of good. It's almost an Ikuhara trademark that his shows have few true "villains" and have protagonists who do the wrong thing sometimes.

Even Sanetoshi gives Himari parental advice despite it having nothing to do with his agenda. I think.

god I wish that were me

its more like the all the children who doesn't achieve nothing in their life and become just another part of the society, people who doesn't have the will to live as they would like.

Empty. Ikuharas visuals are cool buts its what he puts behind them that makes them interesting to watch.

I simply live with the pain.

Overall it was definitely trite and boring, but dammit if I wasn't sucker'd in with the transformation sequence in the first episode. I wish more directors would steal that visual trope, Ikuhara definitely understands the power of repeated stock footage, and I wouldn't even be mad if more people did
youtube.com/watch?v=MBIqQQGOM9s

Actually it's a greek thing. See Herodothus Histories.

Was anybody else mad Himari didn't get to join Double H at the end? That flashback episode with the three of them and seeing her dream destroyed was upsetting to me.

They are not actually alive, user.

I saw the trailer for that.
I immediately thought "wow, this looks like weird retarded shit but the design is REALLY great. Must be Ikuhara."

Hot take: Sarazanmai will be AOTY, just like Yuri Kuma was.

I am fucking bored of time loops at this point.
Also fuck that collecting energy shit.
Fuck madoka.

Yeah the transformation scene was great but other than that Revue didn't really impress me all that much.

I literally just finished it for the first time and it's still good, but far from a classic even just among other shows from the early decade. The visuals are all strong and really build up the atmosphere of mystery and anxiety and the rapid-fire reveals are pretty engrossing the first time, maybe the second too since there's a lot of knowledge you gain about their situation. However, I think it dives too deep into that element in the second half and all the supernatural metaphorical stuff loses power when they're supposed to be dealing with a bunch of real world issues instead of focusing solely on the core cast and their personal issues. That thing where every episode has to end with a big cliffhanger reveal only for it to be resolved with no lasting consequences also wears thin when you see it all at once, especially once they get to the part where you're supposed to take it seriously without lacing everything in kooky antics and penguin comedy. It probably would have been a great ride to watch it week-by-week and college-me probably would have been super into it, but now I just feel like they spent too long stretching out all these threads only to fail to tie them all together at the end. I didn't particularly expect the plot to have a clearly defined series of events for how things ended, but I thought they'd at least do something thematically fitting with fighting against/going along with fate and familial bonds. Instead it just kind of petered out with nobody really doing anything in particular and everything going the way they want because they had the same emotions they pretty much had the whole time.

Also, I still don't really get what the penguins were supposed to be. They started out as tools that were tied to the alien fate hat, but then they just turned into ill-fitting background gags that occasionally represented a character's soul or something even though only the siblings got them.

The Penguins were supposed to be like the shadow girls, but not always.

>Also, I still don't really get what the penguins were supposed to be
I honestly just accepted them as another leftover trope from Ikuni's Sailor Moon days as the token exploitable merch-moving, cute animal mascots of the show, just like Chuchu in SKU, and to a lesser extent since they're actual characters, the kappas and bears more recently.
I thought those were the PSAs they'd show on the subway line with the HHH girls, as far as being a parable of the current episode's events

They never seek redemption though. They just use the curse in an attempt to explain their misfortune as some kind of karmic justice and lament their fate while blaming other people. I don't know why you'd even think it's about that when Kanba goes out of his way to show you that he's completely unrepentant for both his own actions and those of his parents. The core of the story is self-sacrifice, not redemption.

>their ambitions pretty much boil down to them wanting fuck their brother or their daughter
I wouldn't mind this if the reason for it didn't always come down to one kind action when they were kids. It's even worse when only one party remembers it. The flashbacks and metaphors are just an attempt to hide a weak starting point.

Are you trying to turn me on

The first part of Penguindrum really felt like a play to me with how all the other people were just sliding cutouts who never really had any interaction with anyone, so it was really jarring when they suddenly started making a big deal about those cutouts getting fucking murdered. I can go along with a stalker trying to force someone she knows to impregnate her, but blowing up trains because a strange man who you don't trust said he'd use magic to cure one person if you murdered everyone just crosses the line of sensibility.

He wanted her to stop running away from her brothers so that they would stop chasing her and the whole thing would fall apart, driving Kanba further down his path. Fixing her astonishingly poor memory was just a tool to do so.

>really felt like a play
Seems like that's just a thing Ikuhara love. Yuri Kuma has shades of it as well, albeit in lesser amount.

>but blowing up trains because a strange man who you don't trust said he'd use magic to cure one person if you murdered everyone just crosses the line of sensibility.
I'd blow the shit up out of trains if some guy with magic medicine to keep my sister alive told me to do it to get the medicine.

this show was a refreshing experience after watching boogiepop last week

I chose to skip a college class to watch this shit, what has anime done to me, and why did I think it was worth it?

It's ok as long as your parents bribed their way for you to get into college.

I can't say that I didn't liked it. I just don't feel sexual attraction. For example, when Ikuhara shows naked Utena and Anthy on their way out of Academy, I can feel it. But not in the MPD

There must be a way to stop this suffering

Utena is the greatest anime ever made and you can't change my mind.

This is still my presumptive AOTD.
>YEAR OF LINUX DESKTOP
Hello fellow contemporary viewer.
It was totally tied together in the end though, if anything it was bordering on contrivance in how thorough it was. I still look back on the kid in the box episode as the weakest in the entire run for that reason.
It's not avoiding dealing with real world issues via metaphor, it's really quite explicitly metaphor for those very things. The

TTGL's and this are the only versions of the meme I consider canon.
All other versions are fake hype and gay.

Yurikuma turns out to be good right after episode 3. I'm pleased.

i watched this 3 years ago and barely remember anything about it now (mostly because i didn't fully understand it back then ) , what should i know/learn before rewatching it so i can understand it this time

The sarin attacks on the Marunouchi subway line by Aum Shinrikyō in 1995.

What anime tops this in pretentiousness?

And the 1991 crisis

>but I thought they'd at least do something thematically fitting with fighting against/going along with fate and familial bonds.

How is it possible?

This is one of the worst pretentious shows out there. Possibly only FRANXX is more shit

Himari should've won the Shoumabowl.
