Merch is generally just a one off payment for the license.

Don't buy just one thing, wait or look for lots of stuff you want and have them shipped together, especially when it comes to books and doujins where shipping 50 doujins is the same price as just shipping one. You can also take advantage of amazon JP's flat rates with the same idea, for example purchase a whole manga series and have all 20 volumes shipped for 1000 yen instead of just buying a couple.
