Video games and anime are more niche hobbies than the rest. Yeah, they've got mass appeal but there's a way higher % of people watching who are serious hobbyists and have cultivated their tastes over the years. They know what they like, they know what they don't, they know what's objective shit and what's just not their cup of tea. Anime, out of all mediums, DOES seem to have a HUGE amount of objective trash in it. Probably because it almost exclusively borders the line of "escapism aimed at those who appreciate imagination" vs "BUY THE BLURAYS LOOK PANTIES HAHA SHE'S SO CUTE SNIFF HER".
Because anime trash is usually a boring 5/10 show that sputters along to the finish line. It's very very rarely so bad it's funny, it's usually so bad I'd rather do nothing.
I stopped watching anime sometime after the ‘big three’ became popular because of this reason, although I was out for about a decade until I relapsed and binged everything I could on Netflix. Still too much shit anime out there, disappointment after disappointment, nothing fufllling at all but that doesn’t stop me from wading through it all.

That's not what "great trash" means. In anime great trash would be things like Symphogear, JoJo, Keijo, Baccano, Genshiken. And many many other things, so much of it and in such a wide net.
We can appreciate them for what they are though, they're phenomenal trash. Hell I'd even call LoGH "trash pretending to be art" but in a good way, it scratches that itch for schlocky space opera that takes itself very seriously on a grand scale.

Anime growing in popularity and already being bigger market in China, than whole of Japan will not affect japanese anime negatively for simple reasons:
1) For stuff Chinese want, they have own studios - already better than many japanese. Those likely to focus on adapting the trillion popular chinese web novels.
2) What China wants from Japan is same thing west wants from Japan - "japanese" anime. It`ll lose appeal if it becomes westernized/chinese, they want it "wapanese". So they currently finance a production of a lot of stuff source of manga/ln/game of which is popular in China - but let Japanese do it entirely: there is no point in getting involved as it`ll lose appeal to own market they try to sell it.

My advice is to not give shows a chance. I used to give shows the benefit of the doubt but no longer. Not a single one of my favorite shows was bad at first, I never had to bother with the "three episode rule," because I liked them from the beginning. And for the shows I did push through, most I still didn't bother finishing, and those that I did I regret wasting my time on, or at best feel indifferent about.
So I don't bother anymore. If I watch the first episode and am not engaged by the end of it, I drop the show.

Additionally, the concept is wrong to begin with - in a LOT of stories adapted from manga/LNs it takes a while till actual main story starts with a lot of introduction in begining, which rarely fits in single or few episodes and you can't skip right to it either. Many shows on other hand build up intrigue from the start so cannnot be judged until its revealed later as well.
If you don't have patience to wait for order in a restarant, you`ll be eating cup noodles for the rest of your life thinking its the only good food that exists.

Take GITS for example, shirow´s manga is not really anything special but Oshii´s movies are (Oshii can make even Patlabor great), then you got SAC o which they try to replicate his style on a lower level and then another show and another and a live action movie and so on. They milked the IP´s name till it meant nothing. Anime is just another medium.

I remember seeing somewhere on the site that if you watched 4 hours of anime a day it would take over 20 years to watch all the anime. Seeing as more Is produced every year it could well be impossible.
Earliest anime I saw was Gundam 0079, and yes I read manga. I've finished about 75.

I was a point where watching anime and playing games felt a bad job I did not like. This was last spring. So I took a long ass break and didn't watch anime for 3 some months. I picked up another hobby and focused on personal and professional development.
Then this fall, when Jojo rolled around, I picked anime again and everything was sugoi. Of course, I now watch significantly less each season.
