I do think the show would have been better if it focused more heavily on how Isao's changes were taking away the freedom of the skies, and how Kylie personally reacted to those changes. A much stricter character focus would have been better. What happened in episode 6 should have happens in episode 3 or 4, and continued to be the main focus for the rest of the show

They were pretty great pilots the whole time, the stakes just got raised. Isao could control the world fine, he just got ambitious and reverse isekai'd himself. Classic hubris. Wasn't so much the hole that was the problem as Isao having it.

Every other time he was shown as in control, calm, and his positions, while extremes (like the carpet bombing) were never portrayed a purely evil. While the show had an anti-statist position, Isao's opinions and actions were never presented as a demon lord.
In fact, until this episode, I expected this show to get a bad end and be an "end of the wild west" story, where Isao's victory was inevitable.
