I tried to read Chihayafuru but couldn't get through it. I liked Kono Oto Tomare (character designs are less shoujo-like, the drama isn't too dragged out, the romances aren't annoying, etc.).

It's about a group of high school kids joining the Koto club. Lots of clashing and drama early on as they learn to get along and learn more about each other while learning to play the Koto.

Feels like QUALITY, except, crucially, for the koto playing

KOT doesn't have that kind of melodrama. There is drama, but it isn't at that level of bullshit.

Will this have any energy in it or will it put me to sleep? I found chihayafuru enjoyable even while playing the most boring game imaginable Chihaya herself had an insane amount excitement while playing it.

Devils' Line. It was a compressed adaption with inconsistent animation quality and a niche-as-hell premise. Hopefully KOT will end up being more successful than its predecessor.

The manga was pretty lively. The initial drama (the club is going to be disbanded!) kind of sucked, but once it started delving into the characters aside from the MC it got a lot better. The main girl's arc / related arcs are probably the best.

Pretty much. It's pretty neat since it plays out like a sports anime with tournaments/training/hard work vs talent arcs, but has a nice balance of guys and girls in the cast, which you don't often get in sports manga .

I'm happy that this is a two-cour, but the staff and studio are still something of a black box to me.

This is one of my favourite currently running manga (though it has gotten less interesting since the two new characters were introduced) and the manga that makes me cry the most bitch tears.
