The MC probably wasn't, although he was an orphan so who knows. That incident also killed the in-production manga adaption of that series, and probably the actual isekai series by the same author that was supposed to be getting licensed if it was with the same publisher. Might have killed off S-rank Behemoth too, but it's too early to tell. That one has a different publisher though. The author hasn't updated the WN's for any of them or posted anything in the last two months since the incident.

None of those are the most popular. Slime is by far the most popular isekai, and Overlord is a distant 2nd. SAO is 3rd if you count it, and nothing else is anywhere close. MT isn't very popular at all in Japan. Barely even half as popular as Shield Hero, which needed Crunchyroll pushing to get an anime. I'd assume MT is only getting one for similar reasons.

But that's a slippery slope if you can't set any objective limits and instead decide what is or isn't a "world" on the spur of the moment.
For example, one could claim that going to prison equals going to "another world" and therefore being an isekai. Just like with "trapped in virtual reality", you are in a completely unfamiliar environment and are also trapped within it, so there is no real reason to treat it differently from virtual reality in that regard.
However if you use an objective filter instead of a subjective one, like actually going (either only by soul or with body intact) to another dimension, or depending on specifications, a different solar system as the minimum, then both virtual reality and prison would be disqualified from isekai.
I don't think I need to explain which explanation between the subjective and objective definition of a "world" is better in this case, right?

it's not rare for two works to not have anything in common but still be in the same genre. like how both Star Wars and Black Mirror are considered sci-fi
but isekai is closer to time travel in how it works as a genre, in that it can separate distinct themes, but people seek them all out regardless. movies like Groundhog Day is thematically about self improvement while Primer is an exploration of possibilities and dangers. and similarly to the SAO thing, movies like Source Code isn't technically time travel as it's precognition, but I think most people would group it in with their time travel movies.
