It was really hard to get a lot of the referential jokes from this show. Since the few remaining fansub groups just copy Crunchyroll subs, most releases didn't have translation notes for when shit like them referencing samurai movies that gaijins like me wouldn't know about happened. I ended up becoming one of the five people with a HiDive sub just because they had *some* translation notes, but I still had to have Yea Forums explain most of the humor to me. Meanwhile, I remember watching Excel Saga when I just started watching anime, and with minimal knowledge of anime outside of big shit like NGE and Sailor Moon I was still able to get most of the jokes.

RLM explained this better than me in their review of A Haunted House. The thing that separates good parody from bad is if it can still be enjoyable without having seen the thing that the parody is parodying. IIRC one of the examples they used was Spaceballs, you can watch Spaceballs without having seen Star Wars but knowing roughly what Star Wars is about and still have a good time with it. Meanwhile, a movie like A Haunted House makes no sense without seeing all the shit it parodies. The same happened here, without seeing the sources that are parodied in PTE, it just turns into "lol randum memes XD". And this is coming from someone who is a fan of the 4koma and watched this whole thing with Yea Forums, eagerly awaiting for the next episode each week.

Sorry for the dissertation in this reply, I could have probably explained this simpler but I don't feel like rewriting this shit.
